I'm all for some autonomy Jason, but people taking over and kicking the police out of Seattle Police Department's East Precinct to create a 'police free zone', and building community gardens in place was not what I had in mind when I talked about self sufficiency. I hear ya, the amateur sociolgist/fiction reader in me finds it amusing to see a scenario like this brought to life but I'm not a fan of sedition and think the 7 blocks of city should be taken back in an efficient manner and by force if absolutely necessary. The first time I came across the CHAZ situation was from your post, after reading that I knew I had to jump all over that story, there was just no way I was going to let that go. I think the leaders of that venture should be arrested, as well as the guys that are organizing and directing the general destructive riots, but the slightly hippie recycling blacksmith part of me would hope that at least no harm came to the other crazy idealistic kids who just wanted to rebel a little against the ‘establishment’, read poetry and grow lavender, herbs and tomatoes in communal gardens. In any case, those guys are really a mixed bag of politics, even if they got to have their own way and were allowed to set up some sort of autonomous republic with them calling the shots on how it should be run, they would be at each other's throats in short order.

I have lived to see the world become a Mishmash of Rollerball Escape from New York and The Ultimate Warrior I would add to that The Warriors and The Dark Knight Rises. Remember how Bane took over Gotham city, destroying the bridges, and cutting Gotham off from the rest of the country. Bane also tried to destroy the police, trapping them in the sewers. Art imitating life, life imitating art. Loved the finale.

Quite funny how the Left has suddenly stopped mentioning gun control now that the armed men are standing for their cause, isn't it? Well I mean they suddenly forgot about Covid-19 when millions of people took to the streets shoulder to shoulder, especially when they were mocking and belittling the "End the Lockdown" protests not a week before. Naturally the same can be said about many on the Right except in reverse. Hypocrisy is the one thing both sides of the political divide have in common. True enough. Both sides will cite, say, the First Amendment, but then try to dictate what you can and can't express. Gender identification and Confederate paraphernalia, to name examples from both sides.

Except with slightly fewer 70s porn 'staches than expected. Due to the lockdown, many of us sport facial hair not seen in the wild in quite some time.

‘Crowds, yes crowds, return to watch Super Rugby in 'coronavirus-free' New Zealand’ ‘While top-class sport is slowly returning to empty stadiums and with strict hygiene and social distancing measures in place, rugby union fans in New Zealand have gone back to what everyone hopes will be the future. An estimated crowd of 20,000 packed into the Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin Saturday to watch the home side Otago Highlanders host the Waikato Chiefs in the Super Rugby Aotearoa competition. With barely a face mask in sight and with enthusiastic fans hugging each other with delight when points were scored, it was a successful return to the "normal" for Otago, which beat the visitor 28-27 with a last-gasp drop goal from replacement Bryn Gatland. New Zealand lifted nearly all its Covid-19 restrictions earlier this week as no new coronavirus cases were reported for over 20 days straight and with a relatively low death toll of 22 since the pandemic started.’ edition.cnn.com/2020/06/13/sport/rugby-crowds-highlanders-otago-gatland-spt-intl/index.htmlNew Zealand has led the rest of the world in returning to packed stadiums for live sporting events.

‘CHAZ’ protest zone renamed ‘CHOP’ as Seattle leaders promise change' q13fox.com/2020/06/15/chaz-protest-zone-renamed-chop-as-seattle-leaders-promise-change/'SEATTLE -- The 6-9 block area of Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood currently occupied by protesters has been renamed from CHAZ - the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone - to CHOP - the Capitol Hill Organized (or Occupied) Protest. Organizers of the occupied protest zone, which surrounds the now abandoned Seattle Police Department's East Precinct building, say they changed the name because they are not trying to be autonomous or free from local governance. What they want, they say, is systemic change, though Black Lives Matter organizers and community outreach officers with Seattle Police say the occupiers have hijacked a movement for police reform and racial equity. “I’m disgusted with it,” said Victoria Beach, SPD chair of the African American Community Advisory Council, at an event with black clergy members held Sunday night. “It’s no longer about George Floyd or the Black Lives Matter movement.”' What do you get when outdoor festival meets self declared autonomous community center/republic ? The answer is that you get CHAZ or CHOP or whatever they will call it tomorrow.

Note: Due to the nature of this topic and the unfortunate situation the world is in, there will no doubt be some slight political spillover into this conversation. Unfortunately the possibility of the collapse of civilization is now closer to reality than any other moment in recent history thanks to COVID and civil unrest. All views are welcome in relation to these topics.
What's not welcome is coming on to this thread to only personally attack fellow members and accuse them of being in the far right, KKK, racist, etc... This isn't a thread for a personal soap box, grandstanding, or trying to change the world.
Differing views are fine, just be respectful to each other and keep the politics to a minimum, and related to the overall topic.
Also, this is an REH fansite and moderators are doing this on our own free time. Please remember that. People who don't will be banned, it's as simple as that because it's not worth my time to deal with people who can't follow the above guidelines.

There are a number of causes that may be responsible for the collapse of human civilization, including war, pestilence, depopulation and natural catastrophe. ‘A collapsed society could revert to a more primitive state, be absorbed into another one, or completely cease to exist. Various models and theories explaining societal collapse have been proposed, involving things such as environmental effects, depletion of resources, loss of creativity, rising inequality, unsustainable complexity, and decay of social cohesion as factors contributing to the decline and fall of a society. Such a disintegration may be relatively abrupt, as in the case of Maya civilization, or gradual, as in the case of the fall of the Western Roman Empire.’ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Societal_collapse#:~:text=Societal%20collapse%20(also%20known%20as,or%20completely%20cease%20to%20exist.

There is something called a black swan event, a term used to describe a scenario where a surprising major event precedes the collapse of civilisation, a rapid collapse brought on by factors such as a war that has a negative effect on the economy of a nation, an unchecked resource depletion or a global pandemic. The term is based on an ancient saying that presumed black swans did not exist, a saying that became reinterpreted to teach a different lesson after black swans were discovered in the wild. At this point in time it is still hard to predict all the economic and social fallouts as a result of the Covid-19 virus, but I could hazard a guess that international travel and tourism may not return to pre Coronavirus levels for a long time to come, if at all.

More on the unofficial cyber war. 'China 'responsible for cyber attacks targeting Australia' 'Federal government agencies reportedly believe China is behind large-scale cyber attacks on Australia. During a Friday press conference, Prime Minister Scott Morrison refused to speculate who was to blame. But senior sources told the ABC they suspected China was responsible for the attacks. The national broadcaster reported China was seeking to collect intelligence, “develop the capacity to disrupt critical infrastructure, and steal both intellectual property and data in Australia”. Australian Strategic Policy Institute’s Peter Jennings said China was the most likely candidate who would carry out these sorts of attacks. “I think you’ve got to sort of go through a check list of factors, which is not just the capability issues that Morrison talks about but also the interest and intent,” the institute’s executive director told The Australian. “The Russians could do it. The North Koreans could do it, but neither of them have an interest on the scale of this. They have no interest in state and territory government or universities. “So that leads me to conclude that the only country that has got the interest to go as broad and as deep as this and the only country with the sophistication and the size of the intelligence establishment to do it, is China. That’s very clear.” au.news.yahoo.com/china-reportedly-responsible-australia-cyber-attacks-021509501.htmlPM Scott Morrison did not publicly mention China but said later “There aren't too many state-based actors who have those capabilities.'
