I may be totally wrong about this, but I seem to recall that the Barsoom stories were originally published as a serial and not as full novels. (I know that several of Zelazny's novels were spread over a couple of issues of a magazine, but most of the Conan material was published one complete story at a time.)
I'm curious about the serialization of the Barsoom books. Does anyone know... (1) In what magazines were the Barsoom stories serialized? (2) How many magazines per book? (In other words, was Barsoom spread out over a chapter at a time, a third of a book at a time, or what?)
I'm wondering about this because I am re-reading the Barsoom series from scratch and think it would be interesting to know where the cliffhangers were when the originals were published.

At least the first couple of books were serialized in "The All-Story" magazine. The first novel was originally published as "Under the Moons of Mars" in All-Story. More details you can find on Wikipedia, www.edgariceburroughs.com and probably on various Burroughs fansites.

Honestly, I want to like it but for some reason it doesn't resonate with me. The writing style is just too different from ERB's somehow.

Agreed! The dude has a killer style! Another from Bill's site. ERBzine is an absolute wealth of information. I told Bill once he is a pillar in the ERB community; and he really is, with his exhaustive documentation of all things ERB.

Michael Whelan's awesome rendition of that Barsoomian polar abomination, the apt. Just because.

Eight years ago today, art legend, Neal Adams, posted this on Facebook:
Having tasted the reviews for "John Carter", and believe me a taste is way more than enough. I gotta say this. GO SEE THIS MOVIE. Take your parents, take your kids, but for God sake, don't take a movie critic, or that one jackass in your crowd, and you know exactly who I'm talking about, who has got to put down everything. This is not a movie you want to wait to see on TV. No matter how good your TV is.
This is a mind-numbing, brain blast of everything you go to see movies for. It's got great, but unfamiliar actors, it got known actors who walked around on stilts for weeks while they were doing their lines so that the motion capture and CGI would dazzle you so completely that couldn't tell live from CGI. You sit there wishing you could run the scenes slow, and look at it frame by frame. You wish that you were there all by yourself for hypnotic moments, so you could put your whole brain into what you were watching. And then the next moment, you want your whole softball team around you, as if you were watching the world series, so you could say, "Did you see that?, and oh my god?" You want to be on Mars with that light gravity, and experience what it's like to be a kind of Superman. You look for familial resemblances from one character to the next.
Marilyn and I made a choice today. To see "John Carter" a second time, or to see The Academy Award champion, "The Artist". So we saw "The Artist". Was I out of my mind? So we're going to see John Carter on a weekday, and probably again with friends. "The Artist"? Am I doomed never to agree with the critics? These Disney guys, they reached into my mind, and Edgar Rice Burroughs mind, and plucked-out, John Carter, Dejah Thoris, and the rest. I will tell you this. If you see this movie, based on my little voice, you will never come up to me a t a convention and say "Neal, you were wrong". It will never happen.

Crazy thing is in the theater where I saw John Carter in Rutherford, the Artist was in the next room over! The Lorax had the main room.

I saw John Carter something like a dozen times in the theater. I would love to see some group like Netflix make a series that picks up where the movie left off … same actors and set designs. You'd think that it wouldn't cost as much as the original movie, as the main designs had been done already.

A new book focusing on Jetan, Martian Chess! mcfarlandbooks.com/product/Jetan/I remember there was a member on the old forum who was very into this. I'm not sure if he made the trek here or not. Anyone interested in Jetan should check out Burroughs' Chessmen of Mars, book five of the Barsoom series.

Chessmen is the story I recommend to those dipping their toes into the Barsoom stuff, even though JC is not in it.

For those interested, Pocket Universe is putting together a full cast audio drama adapting A Princess of Mars, with the permission of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc.
The above Kickstarter link is still active for another week, but they met their funding goal in under 100 minutes. They are now getting close to $55,000.00.
So far here is the announced cast:
John Carter - Sean Patrick Flannery (Boondock Saints, Young Indiana Jones)
Tars Tarkas - Tim Russ (Tu'Vok of Star Trek: Voyager)
Kantos Kan - Bruce Boxleitner (Babylon 5, Bring Them Back Alive)
Some really nice stretch goals were added to the campaign, may have already been met. Check it out if you are interested. I pledged at the digital level, but might up it to the physical level.

I wouldn't say no to one o' them Woolas.
