A crimson eyed, guant, drug dependent, but kinda strong at the same time, albino emperor from a ‘not quite’ human race of decadent Melniboneans , who is variously known as Womanslayer, the White Wolf and the Pale Prince of ruins amongst other things, has a Lord of chaos for a patron, and wields a cursed magical sword called Stormbringer ( takes the place of the drugs ).
Yeah, considering the success of the Joker movie, I would say Elric would seemingly do better than a Conan adaptation in this day and age
Not that Elric is somehow intrinsically better or more suited for the modern big screen or tv/streaming series than Conan, but probably because too many people misunderstand Conan, that is, they view Conan as a generic late twentieth century pop culture sword for hire barbarian, as opposed to understanding the nihilism and anti civilisation themes that run through REH’s Conan stories and other works. That misconception would probably bring the makers back to something like the Momoa Conan movie.
Myself, given a choice, I would rather see more Conan being done on screen, but I can understand why Elric at first glance might be seen by the shakers and movers as a more attractive outing for contemporary movie goers.
They might as well do an Elric movie in any case, or people will start comparing an Elric series too much with the Witcher one.

Can someone familiar with the Moorcock universe point out which series are sword & sorcery, or at least something resembling it? I want to read some of his original stuff (so far I've only spent time with Elric comics), but he has publishes so many books that I'm having trouble wrapping my head around everything...

In general the main Eternal Champion series is S&S, or at least close to it. That would be Elric, Corum, Hawkmoon and Eternal Champion/Silver Warriors/Dragon in the Sword. You can branch out from there as your tastes dictate.

I know some comics are out there...but that is not what this is, right? The article says "illustrations." So the novels with some artwork...?

That's the funny thing, I first found out about Conan in SSOC, later the Ace/Sphere/Lancer books with the Frazetta covers, finally unadulterated REH such as The Complete Chronicles of Conan compilation.
Not with Elric. To date, never read one Elric comic. Just the eternal champion books by Michael Moorcock. Elric is probably my favourite incarnation of the eternal champion, but enjoyed reading about Corum and Hawkmoon too.
Lost myself in the whole damned hero thing at one point. I envy anyone discovering the series for the first time.

This is the first time I ever saw a rendition of Elric. The Jack Kirby cover of Giant-Size Conan #5 back in 1975. I still remember when I saw it and where I bought it. I actually shop at the same grocery store, though I lived in another town at the time. marvel.wikia.com/wiki/Giant-Size_Conan_Vol_1_5This was a big reason why bought The Book of Robert E. Howard and Elric of Melnibone at Waldenbooks a year later.

I often dislike crossovers, even to a cranky extent. But Elric meeting Conan seemed like a nice enough idea, maybe as they are such complete opposites. Besides, Elric inhabits a complex multiverse, not a single world, so Conan's earth could well be part of that multiverse.

"Several appearances"? That's a bit of an understatement...
