On this date in 1950, ERB passed away while in bed, reading a comic. He was 74. Ed had gone from something of a failure in the first 35yrs of life to being the biggest author on the planet, a pioneer in multimedia marketing and self-publishing, one of the main forces behind the developement of the San Fernando Valley, the founder of Tarzana, California and the oldest enlisted US war correspondent in WWII. When he died, more than 20 movies had been made using his creations. He left behind children and grandchildren who revered his memory. We have never seen his like since. oparianvault.blogspot.com/p/edgar-rice-burroughs.html

Interesting. What was more interesting (to me) was how Arroz described the introduction. Sounds like her opinion belonged more to Mein Kampf than Tarzan of the Apes. Perhaps B&N might have considered an actual ERB fan to write their introduction to an ERB novel. It is quite often fascinating to hear what new readers of this story have to say about it. After years of haranguing him to do so, a good friend of mine recently finished it and all he had to say was that he couldn't stand how the professor was going to hand his daughter off willy-nilly to Crandler. And I'm like WHAT ABOUT ALL THE GOOD STUFF!!??!! Ha - got that out of my system. While Tarzan of the Apes isn't my favorite Burroughs, or even my favorite Tarzan, it is one of my favorite books of all time.

The future of the expansive Edgar Rice Burroughs Memorial Collection at the University of Louisville is looking uncertain: www.erbzine.com/mag30/3001.htmlFirst, regarding the Burroughs Bibliophiles Endowment Fund: the current balance is $5,792.50. This principal is invested, and so grows at whatever rate the university investments grow. But the librarians will not receive any of the income until one year after the fund reaches the $10K threshold. Therefore, for those of us who care about maintaining curation and growth of the collection, getting the BB Endowment fund to $10K should be the first priority. I should mention that George McWhorter has set up his own endowment fund for the ERB collections and that fund will also support the collection. The goals and purposes of the two endowment funds are the same. With regard to the BB Endowment, once an income stream is established (with $10K in principal the income probably would be less than $500 per year), we would use the funds to support the Burroughs Collections. At this point the ERB Collections consist of huge contributions from George McWhorter- which included the Vern Coriell Collection, and huge contributions from Bob Hyde, and Roy and Della White. Many other collectors have made smaller contributions. Contributions are easy. Make your check out to University of Louisville - Rare Books. Specify in the "For" line at the bottom left of the check that you wish your contribution to go to the Burroughs Bibliophiles Endowment. Send you check to ERB Collections - Rare Books, Ekstrom Library, Belknap Campus, The University of Louisville, Louisville, KY 40292, and to the Attention of Prof. Delinda Buie, Professor and Curator of Rare Books. Remember that your contribution will be completely tax deductible as a charitable donation and U of L will send you a receipt to that effect. It would be wonderful if we could get the endowment fund to $10K while George McWhorter (the collection founder) is still with us. The Burroughs Bibliophiles is a nonprofit 501c(3) literary society devoted to studying and promoting interest in the works, creations, and life of Edgar Rice Burroughs. Founded September 4, 1960, the group's membership list boasts its fair share of bestselling authors, artists, scientists, teachers, and academicians, as well as readers who simply love a good story well told. Membership benefits include four issues of the journal, "The Burroughs Bulletin," and as many issues of the newsletter, "The Gridley Wave," as are published during the time span of those four Bulletin issues. The Bibliophiles also sponsor an annual convention, "The Dum-Dum," normally held in the summer. The 2017 Dum-Dum, in Coldwater, Michigan, is set for August 3 through 5. Our own Chris Adams will be there. Kaor!www.erbzine.com/dumdum/17ddform.jpgburroughsbibliophiles.com/

I stumbled on mention of this site on ERBZine.com ( here) with some neat publications of ERB's works. Like the Night Shade Press editions of Smith's work, they go back to original editions for the text, which is always a plus to me. I found it interesting they published the All Story edition of Princess of Mars under it's original title of Under the Moons of Mars. They appear to be available in HB and Trade PB format. Note- click the 'Fiction' tab to see the ERB listings. www.erbvillepress.com/

Art by Tom Grindberg for the Deluxe Edition of ERB: The Bibliography. Hun, Very cool indeed. I bought the Standard edition awhile back so it's neat to see this interior shot. As I'm going to the 2017 DUM DUM I am really hoping to obtain Mr. Zeuschner's autograph on my copy of his Bibliography and also a graphic novel I have for which he wrote the Introduction called Tarzan Omnibus by Darkhorse.

Hello Chris, The 2017 DUM DUM sounds excellent. Not that much happening in London these days, but, there is a 'Pulp and Paperback Mart' in a couple of weeks. Here's a couple more plates by Tom Grindberg from the limited edition of Back to the Stone Age.
