oh man... glad I found this site...
the more I learn of RE Howard - the man - the more I am saddened by his early demise
which is selfish I know

Robert E. Howard lived in Bagwell, Texas from approximately 1913 to 1915, and it is there that he first attended school. The photo above is of the school children from roughly the time period he would have been there. It is curious to wonder if Howard is in this picture? Here is the link to the page that has the photo: sites.rootsweb.com/~txredriv/album/bagschool.htm

I think I've got enough ink to print his out and have a good butcher's see if REH is in this photo.

My money is on the second row (front/seated to back/standing) from the right -- fourth in. Too bad it is not a high quality scan.

Yeah, it could be. I collected a few more photos of a young REH and assembled them in the pic below. Please excuse the terrible photo editing The brow line is very similar, same goes for the ears and the hair is parted from the left on all of the photos where you can see enough of his haircut. I dunno. It's starting to look a lot like REH now! What do you think?

Especially when compared to his high school picture, far right. The same hair and hair part as you said. The same ears and nose. The eyes tend to be darkly shaded in many of his pictures. The mouth is different, but it is because he is holding a different than usual pose - his lips are somewhat parted like he was talking during the photo. I think it is him, especially in light of it being the right school at the right time. I'll have to contact the historical society to see if they can send me a scan of the actual photo. Thanks for some nice detective work!

Thanks Linefacedscrivener, for finding the photo and REH in the photo. I think you're right it probably is Robert E. Howard, but according to the description of the photo at the link Archie Kirk was born in 1901 (the 2nd kid to the right of REH with the tie) and REH in January 1906. That kid does not look 4 or 5 years older than REH, they look around the same age. Or maybe he does? I dunno!? Description at the link: This is contributed by Don Kirk of Sunnyvale, TX. His father, Archie Kirk (b. 1901), is the boy with the tie, 2nd row, and second from the right, kneeling. This is the school that was attended by the author, Robert E. Howard (b. 1906), who entered first grade at Bagwell School. The Howard family left Bagwell in 1915. The photo's date is estimated by how old Archie Kirk seems to be. None of the other children are identified.

But that's gotta be Robert E. Howard! I think I just found some more info on (William) Archie Kirk. According to the link below he was born on the 6th of December in 1901, I guess that makes him 4 years and a couple of months older than REH. The info in the link below is also provided by his son Don Kirk: www.findagrave.com/memorial/38153368/william-archie-kirk

Wow! Just wow! What an incredibly detailed picture. There are things I never noticed before in that photo. A really nice job.
