He may not be wrong, but it’s the key thing: make something people want to watch and they will. Do something along the lines of the 2011 film and yeah, that’s money down the drain.

This guy has a point. Focus on making a killer Conan live-action series first and foremost, don't bite off more than they can chew in regards to films and cartoons or making an REH Universe, etc... They need a great Conan project, something they haven't managed to produce yet.

Wow. That movie failed because it was a terrible movie that nore little relation to the source material. The source material is not the issue and the character is as popular as ever. And, barring one or two minor adjustments, I don't see Conan as being "antithetical to "Woke"" in fact are think there are many themes that could be explored from a modern perspective. Civ vs barbarism being one. REH had several strong female characters, Conan treats everyone pretty much the same regardless of where they are from and villains come in all shades and sizes. My "grow up" was in response to statements I keep seeing about "Oh I suppose Conan will be a black lesbian" or similar.

Daredevil Showrunner Confirms He Was Working on Conan the Barbarian Series Before Leaving NetflixThis morning brought the surprise news that Conan the Barbarian is headed for television and that the sword and sorcery series has found a home at Netflix. According to the report, the streamer is developing a live-action TV series featuring the Robert E. Howard character. There was no word as of the announcement about who would be the driving creative force behind the show and it was reported they're searching for a writer/showrunner and directors for the new series. However, Netflix apparently had one already lined up in former Daredevil showrunner Steven DeKnight who confirmed he was attached at one point.
"Sad but true: I was attached to spearhead this before Netflix and I parted ways," DeKnight tweeted after it was pointed out he should take on the property. The Pacific Rim: Uprising director was previously signed on to an overall deal at the streamer in 2018 which lead to him leading the adaptation of Mark Millar's Jupiter's Legacy. DeKnight departed that series, and his Netflix deal, in September of 2019.
Conan on the other hand could apparently be a big property for Netflix moving forward. Today's announcement of the series comes from Fredrik Malmberg and Mark Wheeler's Pathfinder Media, and will be the first of many between Netflix and Conan Properties International(owned by Malmberg's Cabinet Entertainment). Apparently this deal gives Netflix the exclusive option to use the Conan literary library and develop both TV shows and films from the various books.
Created by writer Howard in 1932, the first Conan short stories were published in Weird Tales magazine. The character would gone on to be featured in comics, film, television, video games, and further novels. Perhaps the most famous version of Conan worldwide is the one played by Arnold Schwarzenegger on the big screen in the 1982 feature film directed by John Milius. He would follow it up with Conan the Destroyer in 1984. In the years since Schwarzenegger has been vocal about hoping to revisit the character as King Conan, but it's failed to materialize.
Aquaman himself Jason Momoa went on to star as Conan in a 2011 film reboot, now a notorious flop by Hollywood reboot standards. The character has previously appeared on television in two animated TV shows and a short-lived live-action series, Conan the Adventurer, in 1997. A Conan TV series was previously announced to be in development at Amazon Prime Studios in 2018, but that clearly didn't go very far with the Netflix news.
In any event, there are many tales of Conan and this story shall also be told.Words by By SPENCER PERRY Source: comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/daredevil-showrunner-confirms-working-on-conan-the-barbarian-netflix/

My "grow up" was in response to statements I keep seeing about "Oh I suppose Conan will be a black lesbian" or similar. I agree. I gotta admit, I take nothing for granted when it comes to TV/movies involving Cabinet/Pathfinder Entertainment - even if I see the final trailer a couple of days before the release date in 2 years I still won't believe it till I see it. Fredrik Malmberg's efforts to date, bringing the creations of REH to the screen leave a lot to be desired. Nevertheless, I have no concerns regarding the source material being translated to screen. I know some REH fans feel overly concerned with modern writers straying from the original work of REH too much according to modern sensibilities and feel it will be nothing like the original Conan. It could happen, but it'll truly be a missed opportunity. Scanning through the works of Fantasy (sword & sorcery if you like) since REH, I cannot find another author with anything resembling the Hyborian Age. It is a representation of our ancient world, not the Euro-centric world that most modern writers of Fantasy are sometimes accused of by critics. In REH's Hyborian Age, we're all there, almost every civilisation from our remote past is represented in the Hyborian Age. This is something to be celebrated, and expanded upon on screen! Not condemned!

Yep, plenty of work arounds. Vale of Lost Women done with the Kozaki, problem solved.
Sad to find out DeKnight was involved but because of something completely unrelated, we get robbed of it. Oh well, at least it shows they were looking at the right people.

My concern is not so much that they’ll edulcorate Howard’s work by making it "too politically correct" but that they will ignore his work altogether. This is what Hollywood did with Conan the barbarian, Conan the destroyer, Conan the reboot, the TV series, , Kull the Conqueror and Solomon Kane. Same with the adaptation in comics of Agnes de Chastillon recently. And it’s not limited to REH: screenwriters have re-written Greek mythology too!

With the approach Condal was taking and having DeKnight (almost) on board, they do seem to be making a conscious effort to make it far more REH centric than any previous version. The original story didn't explicitly say that was the way they were going, concentrating more on how wide ranging it was. But I'm going to hope they will continue down the path they started on with the Amazon series. Hopefully THIS is what Fredrik actually sent the GotG gif about.

I'll be honest, I read this Deadline story fast so I may have missed something. It said this netflix show will be based on the "character" Conan created by REH. It didnt say it was based on the "stories" by REH. Or did I miss that? Since it mentions that Netflix will have rights to a live action show, animation, and movie, I would think the show would be based on one of the comic book runs or the hundreds of paperback's with a little REH sprinkled in. I wouldn't be surprised if they did a Arnold movie and based any animation they might do on REH's original stories. I'm not saying that's what I want, but...

There'll be plenty of time to be disappointed later on should our worst fears materialise :-)

There is no way that Malmberg is going to let this be a repeat of Conan 2011. I genuinely believe that he had little creative weight on that film, with his position as Producer merely a courtesy. The possibility for the REH and Conan as extended franchise for this series is nothing less than a new dawn to bring the character to a modern generation that are vaguely familiar with him from the Fun.com games and the Arnold films. 'Conan Onscreen' has had a terrible three decades, time to give the Cimmerian a break and do justice to Howard's original vision with a minimum of compromise for modern audiences.

Seems like this deal was in place long before the announcement which, along with the timing, supports johnnypt's comment on a two year clause from the old Amazon option.
