I am hoping to source an online quote attributed to REH. "It is only the promise of death that makes life worth living". I have seen it on goodreads.com and quoteslyfe.com, but never sourced.

HP Lovecraft said something similar in a letter:
"All the loudest aesthetic & philosophic voices of the hour are howling & whining doctrines & values which can lead to nothing save disintegration, chaos, & the death of all the background-factors which give life the illusion of being worth living."

Couple of REH scholars have come back to me and said it's NOT an REH quote. One of them said "REH has a couple different lines related to "worth living," but not that one in any of his fiction or letters. I think it was probably a misinterpretation of a line from THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD (1996) based on Novalyne Price's memoir." If I get anything else back I'll let you know.
