Excellent story! I notice that the version reprinted in Wandering Star's Ultimate Triumph is a bit different than the one reprinted in Del Rey's Horror Stories of REH. I am hoping someone can provide some insight as to which can be considered definitive.

So that version, which ends with "the gusty, elemental, unreasoning laughter of the Sons of Aryas" has the restored text, i.e. closer to the spirit of REH? Makes sense since I prefer this ending.

Based on the appendix in Del Rey's Horror Stories the text was taken from Avon Fantasy Reader, 1952 (as “The Witch from Hell’s Kitchen”). An untitled first draft typescript and an incomplete, titled, second draft typescript of this story are extant. It seems likely that someone else, perhaps agent Oscar Friend, was responsible for rewriting the story for Avon Fantasy Reader. It is also possible there was a complete, final version by REH, which was discarded after typesetting the story.
I remember Rusty Burke said he put together a version from the first and second drafts, and that went into Wandering Star's Ultimate Triumph. I have not seen those drafts, but maybe the appendix of Ultimate Triumph has some additional info.

From the appendix of The Ultimate Triumph: "For this edition, we have chosen to present the earlier draft, supplemented by material from the incomplete draft." Yes quite clearly closer to the spirit of REH, which reveals yet another shortcoming of the otherwise exquisite Del Rey editions

Say, did they ever get around to putting up those extra copies of whatever hardcovers they had up for sale? I was hoping a couple of extra Ultimate Triumphs showed up.

Yes you can still pick them up on eBay, the trade edition (standard hardcover w/ dust jacket) runs about $100-150 & the Ltd. Edition ( w/ slipcase & a few extra Frazetta pieces) $200 & up. The leather-bound Edition seems to be unobtainable these days. I was fortunate enough to pick up the trade Edition for a decent price on eBay- $65

It took me years to pick up Swords of the North because that one was a little pricey before my girlfriend got it for me for my birthday (luckily, right before it went out of print) WS announced they were digging through their warehouse and would be selling what's there at some point. I've been hoping some UT copies show up. I do have all the Baens so I have the revised edition of the story, though it sounds like Rusty prepared a new version for UT.

Yes SotN is a great collection, pretty much unobtainable now except at an exorbitant price. Hold onto that one Johnny! Yes the version of the House of Arabu found in UT (pub. 1999) was prepared by R. Burke & David Gentzel w/ the asst. of Glenn Lord & appears to be unique to that edition.
