Seeing the reference to Annissia makes me fear this thing will be tainted by Gail Simone's influence. Queen of Plagues was absolute garbage. The Character Draygan portrayed by Robert Sheehan could also be Dragan the Emperor of Zamora from the Mark Russell run. In that arc the Zamorans build a bridge across the Vilayet to invade Hyrkania!!! In the article they still mention Tasha Huo's script which I think is now completely rewritten by MJ Bassett. Joey Soloway will get a credit as a Producer or something like that and so will Gail Simone. That don't really mean that much, probably Millennium's way of acknowledging their involvement before MJ took over. I hope! |

I hope its not Lara Heller or Matilda Lutz.
Huge disappointment.
Matilda has that good Italian housewife/teacher/girl next door face. She has typical Mediterranean look and skin color. She will look odd with red hair like any girl of her origin would.
She is tiny and flat-chested.
She has nothing similar to Sonja.
I saw her in Revenge-she's a good actress and she was OK in action scenes- but with a shotgun. I can swallow that she can take down a few big guys with a firearm, but there's no way she'll convince me that she, so thin and petite, is capable of taking down bunch of Hyborian Age warriors or monsters in the fight with a sword and knife.
Total miscast.
Having Wallis Day on set and NOT as Sonja is a BIG missed opportunity.
Yes, it looks like they did the casting blindfolded, because there is no other explanation for such an idiotic decision.
Pity and another missed opportunity to see real Sonja on the big screen.

Jeez, she makes Gwenyth Paltrow look like Dolly Parton. I hope MJ is feeding her, she needs to bulk up just a bit...

It don't make no difference if Matilda Lutz is of Italian descent, she still looks the part. Admittedly, it may be a little difficult convincing the audience she is strong enough to portray Sonja, nevertheless, I'm sure MJ Basset will work something out.

You just know that in the casting room, they recognized her glaring lack of breasts and how inaccurate that would be for her to play Red Sonja...and decided that's exactly why they should cast her.

Red Sonja: Sacha Baron Cohen Reportedly Turned Down Surprising Villain RoleBy Jenna Anderson  After years of being in works, a new Red Sonja movie is finally on its way to becoming a reality, with production beginning earlier this week in Bulgaria. The sword-and-sorcery film has gone through a number of evolutions over the years, with the most prominent indication previously set to be directed by Transparent creator Joey Soloway and star Ant-Man and the Wasp alum Hannah John-Kamen. While Soloway later exited Red Sonja and the script was rewritten, a new report confirms who was previously approached to portray the villain of that incarnation. According to The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision newsletter, Borat and The Trial of the Chicago 7's Sacha Baron Cohen was offered $7 million to portray the film's villain, but ultimately turned it down.
In particular, Cohen would have been tasked to play Kulan Gath, a sorcerer who has had a unique comics tenure in the Red Sonja corner and beyond. Initially established as a Conan the Barbarian villain in the 1970s, Kulan was later folded into the Marvel universe, and has gone up against the X-Men and the Avengers on multiple occasions. Once Dynamite Entertainment got the rights to Red Sonja in 2006, they were also able to utilize the villain.
The idea of Kulan making his live-action debut in Red Sonja, much less with Oscar-nominated Cohen set to play him, definitely would have been interesting, especially considering the character's unique comics history. It does not appear that Kulan has a role in the current incarnation of the film, so we'll just have to imagine what could have been.
Red Sonja will be directed by M.J. Bassett, from a script by Soloway and Tasha Huo. The film will star Matilda Lutz as Red Sonja, with Wallis Day as Annisia, Robert Sheehan as Draygan, Michael Bisping as Hawk, Martyn Ford as General Karlak, Eliza Matengu as Amarak, Manal El Feitury as Ayala, and Katrina Durden as Saevus.

I don't think she looks the part at all. Red Sonja is curvaceous, and although attractive, she has a commanding personality. This chick looks like she needs to be starring in a WB series.
Crom, why can't they get just one of these films right? The Conan reboot was a miss. The D&D movie is a comedy. And now, this.

There is a part of me that wants them to make Red look like a real Hyrkanian and I get sympathetic to the posts from Hun about what she should look like, and then there is that part of me that says ' f..k this, just give me something that looks like the smack between the eyes image on that Red flag for Red Sonja video cover' a post or two up.

It'd be cool if they did go for something along the lines of the Red Flag video art. But, we know that ain't gonna happen. (Edit: I dunno, Matilda Lutz could end up wearing some kinda variation of the Chain-mail Bikini) They can't even get the Hyrkanians or REH's Hyborian Age right in the Red Sonja comics so I doubt they'll get any of that right in the movie. Hopefully, the influence of Simone, Soloway and Huo will be minimal and MJ Basset can deliver a decent movie. |

From what I can make out from this article it looks like they'll be going for the Mark Russell run with Draygan (Robert Sheehan) building a bridge across the Vilayet Sea to conquer Hyrkania. Oliver Trevena Joins the Cast of the Red Sonja Reboot Film Last week, word broke that the Red Sonja reboot movie finally started production with Matilda Lutz in the leading role. Now, Deadline is reporting that Oliver Trevena has also joined the cast in a key role.
