I didn't know where to put this, and I know I didn't want it to go in the Conan section because I don't want to limit discussion to Conan, so apologies if there is a better place to put this thread.
I'm trying to put together a very short list of fiction for my son to read. I wanted to focus on short stories and not novels, because I know if I ask him to read a novel he probably won't bother with it. The list has to include a REH story, but I can't decide which one. I had thought to maybe select "Red Nails" or maybe "Tower of the Elephant" with Conan, but I realize that there are so many other awesome REH stories that I wasn't sure if I wanted to limit him to Conan because he already has a pre-conceived notion of what Conan is all about. So maybe Solomon Kane or El Borak or one of the Mythos ones, or maybe go with Conan anyway.
So what one short story would be Howard's best? Any thoughts?

I agree that "The Tower of the Elephant" would be best as it has so many Howard elements in the story, it is incredibly well written with an almost cinematic appeal, and presents a good Howard-Conan for those who think they know the character through Pop Culture-Conan. I recently sent this story to my nephew who is 10 and in a letter back he raved about the story. It most certainly caught his fancy and may well have created a future Howard fan. "Bull-Dog Breed" is also a good one, and for Solomon Kane, I would recommend "Red Shadows."

for Solomon Kane, I would recommend "Red Shadows." I was debating between "Red Shadows" and "Wings in the Night." SK is either my favorite or 2nd favorite REH character (up there with Conan) and I really hate for a short list to omit Solomon Kane.

That is a tough debate. "Wings in the Night" is one of my favorite Howard stories overall as well SK stories. A person couldn't go wrong either way.

You can't go wrong with "Tower of the Elephant". It's a great introduction to Conan. He's young and powerful and thoughtful, and the story has an unearthly feel to it. And the elephatine alien creature will be captured in his imagination forever! This story and "The Frost Giant's Daughter" hooked me in when I was a kid.
