Let me live in a bar by the side of the road,
Where the race of man goes dry,
The men who are "drys" and the men who are "wets"
(But none are so "wet" as I.)
-"The Bar by the Side of the Road," Robert E. Howard
This thread is dedicated to Deuce Richardson.
I was reading the DMR blog at breakfast this morning and was reading the article by Deuce titled, "Edgar Wallace: More than Kong" here:
dmrbooks.com/test-blog/2022/2/10/edgar-wallace-more-than-kong
At the very end of the article he wrote this: "Raise a glass to the shade of Edgar Wallace, sword-brothers. They do so every night in the London pub dedicated to his memory. We still need a bar named 'The Robert E. Howard'. Any takers?"
So, I got to thinking what a bar like this would look like.
I was thinking for his love of all things Celtic, one would have to start with the Irish pub template. Mix in a lot of Texas and some Mexico.
The picture above would, of course, have to hang prominently above the bar, and the schooner size beer would have to be the "Howard sized beer." It could run the Novalyne size (the 12 oz), the Celtic size (the traditional pint), and the Howard sized beer (what is that, 64 oz?).
The Collected Letters and Bobbie Derie's Robert E. Howard Bar Guide would be excellent sources for types of drinks to serve. Beer in the "old beer can" is a must, and perhaps some of the beers Howard drank in his time that still are around today. Pearl anyone?
Then there could be the specialty drinks: The Hour of the Dragon for the guys, the Zenobia for the ladies, and the Heart of Ahriman for a drink that would resurrect the dead.
I can see the bar lined with bookshelves featuring copies of Howard's books. And every evening an honorific toast, to raise a glass (or beer can) to the shade of Robert E. Howard. That would be mandatory.
We could also take a nod from Howard Days and have a Howard poetry reading session where people can get up and read their favorite Howard poem at the mike.
I've got probably a million ideas in my mind, but I thought it would be interesting to hear from others on this forum.
Who knows, maybe this thread will become the business plan for someone would could actually open up "The Robert E. Howard Bar."
