Definitely looking forward to this one. The Witch is one my favourite recent horror films and a very impressive debut. Eggers also acknowledges a strong influence from Conan the Barbarian - "There’s probably too many nods to Conan [in The Northman] because I watched it so much as a kid. It was a seminal film for Sjón as well" ( ign - The Northman).

Certainly a number of scenes very reminiscent of CtB'82 in the trailer. Hope they haven't gone too over the top with them in the film.

Seems very watchable judging by the trailer.

Looking good, even if we ignore the copy-pasted scenes from Conan, but: visuals and settings are the only things I like about his movies.
Style over substance, boredom, pretentious and forced political messages (feminist horror The Witch and boring drama about dangerous toxic masculinity - The Lighthouse).
I like Skarsgard and Dafoe, they are great choices for the movie like this, but that Disney show look-alike kid and silicon doll Kidman definitely do not belong to the time that the film shows.
We'll see. I really hope that Eggers will pleasantly surprise me this time and make something worthy and interesting.

Gotta say, this looks amazing. Even the costuming looks fairly accurate.

THE NORTHMAN's Alexander Skarsgard is a Conan-sized BEAST!! - Electric Playground Movie Review Thanks Hun. Look forward to checking this movie out. That feat where he catches the spear in mid flight and throws it back was quite a popular one at the time. In Njal's saga Gunnar of Hlidarend does it during a ship battle, catches the spear, spins and throws it straight back 'and the man in its way fell dead,' as the saga sayeth. Can easily picture Conan doing that kind of thing.
Thanks for posting the reviews Hyrkanian.

I really hope that John Milius has a creative consultant credit on The Northman.

I really hope that John Milius has a creative consultant credit on The Northman. I’m pretty sure Milius didn’t invent the “child grows up to seek revenge “ plot. As a matter of fact, he likely borrowed the idea from various Nordic and Icelandic Sagas that were positively rife with tales of murder, revenge and redemption…

Northman is based on the story of Amleth otherwise known as the original story on which Shakespeare based Hamlet. Eggers wanted to film a version more strongly rooted in its original context.

Saw The Northman yesterday and enjoyed the heck out of it. Eggers would be great for a Conan film. There's even a scene in the film that mirrors a Lin Carter pastiche of Conan that sent chills down my spine.
