Dr. Jackson Crawford interviews the Northman's Norse expert:
Still need to see this myself, hoping to catch it this week before it exits theaters.

It might be neat to see Eggers take on one of the more history based versions of King Arthur, like an adaptation of Rosemary Sutcliff's Sword at Sunset.

Bought the digital edition and watched around 20 minutes, damn this is good. I loved the historical horror of the Witch and the Lighthouse was very trippy, but this could be really great. I'm going to finish it tonight.

A preview of Dr. Jackson Crawford's thoughts on the Northman, a bit about the runes. Thanks for the Jackson Crawford videos. I've enjoyed some of his videos relating to the Huns, but, then again of course I would.

I watched this movie a couple of days ago.
It's a great movie. Can definitely see certain elements that seem inspired by Conan. By Tengri, I think I even spotted some Turkic tribesmen (probably Khazars) trying to protect the Slavic people from the Viking raid early on in the movie. I like the Shamanic-like elements both Slavic and Norse in the movie and the Nordic take on what sounded like Tuvan throat singing and the Jaw Harp - a very interesting soundscape for the movie.

No problem, I've been a viewer of his channel for a long time. He puts out some great videos.
Here's his own thoughts on the Northman:
I'm about halfway through the film, and it's so good I almost want to start it again from the beginning.

I may well follow suit and buy myself a digital copy soon. Let us know your final thoughts.

Finished this last night and I thought it was a great movie. It's not a perfect movie, but I'd rate it 8/10. For those of us on this board it is a definitive much watch. I feel like I have had my need for a Conan film quenched with this sword and sorcery tale. It is not a must buy right now on streaming, I'd wait for the Bluray if you are into physical media.
What I liked:
The scene where Amleth travels to the burial mound to obtain his word, Drengr.
All of the scenes that had a hint of the supernatural, really. I thought these were handled very well.
The overall story worked well, I thought Nicole Kidman did a good job, especially. And Skarsgard was good, too.
The final fight scene amidst the lava.
What I didn't like:
For having a supposedly 100 million dollar budget... I'm not sure where that money went. Don't get me wrong, this movie looks amazing, but it's not a Ridley Scott epic by any means. This is a more personal story. I guess they spent the money on sets, costumes, etc... All which looked great.
Not enough action. But you can always have more action IMO. But this film did a good job showcasing different types of combat scenes. The ambush and death of the king at the beggining, Amleth as a member of the group of berserkers when he grows up, Amleth killing with stealth while in Iceland, and the one-one-one sword duel at the end near the volcano.

I heard somewhere that various Covid related issues really blew up the budget.

I'll have to watch this movie again, but I don't think you can really find any supernatural elements in this movie. Or can you? I dunno.

Damn, that was good. Raw and primal. I feel like it took huge steps towards capturing the "otherness" of a past culture in a way I've never experienced before. I can't stop thinking about it, and will have to watch it again soon.
I particularly liked the shamanistic elements, the use of hallucinogens, the right of passage ceremony... All things that have been depicted many times in film, but never quite like this.
I can understand why it's so polarizing. I keep seeing it compared to shows like Vikings or Last Kingdom. I enjoyed both, but after this, I'll see them differently. They seem to be very much filtered through modern lenses. Maybe "sanitized" is a good word - they're brutal, yes, but not primal or visceral in the way Northman is.
Oh, and the music was fantastic. I listen to a lot of "viking" music like Danheim, Sowulo, Nytt Land, Wardruna, etc. They have the jaw harps and throat singing and taglharpe, but they too feel so modern and tidy compared to this.

Thanks for your perspectives Garbanzo. It's a sobering thought to realise that even the original Icelandic sagas were themselves somewhat sanitized, having been written down by Christian Icelanders some 200 to 300 years after the events they describe.
