Hi all!
I'm a big fan of Dark Horse Conan (specially the Kurt Busiek run) and I'm trying to get back all the stuff I stupidly gave away years ago. I hate Wood & Cloonan run, like any sane person, and I do my best to believe that it never happened. My question is: do you think that "Conan the Avenger" is worth its price? I mean, the secondary market is kind of crazy right now, at least in Spain. It's not easy to get this old Dark Horse adaptations. But there is some cool stuff in there, specially the return of Janissa and Thoth-Amon. I remember taking a look at some issues back in two thousand something and thinking "wow, this art is waaaaaaaay too sketchy". But I dunno, maybe I was too harsh.
What do you guys think?

Brian Ching's art was definitely too scratchy and not-detailed. But the Writing in Avenger is on point. Van Lente did a significantly better job at writing Conan than Brian Wood. You'll find that's a common opinion on this forum but I don't speak for everyone. I really liked this run, despite the art because it adapted some of my favorite stories. As for tracking copies down, I got all 25 issues in a lot on eBay for pretty cheap. I live in New York so It's definitely different in Spain. The worth all depends on how much you enjoy the stories personally.

And what about the looks of Conan himself? Isn't it weird that he has shrinked in size since Giorello's run?

That’s part of the art issue, scratchy and inconsistent. The crucifixion issue of of Witch features a fill in artist (can’t remember who) that I found an improvement. The shrinking began during Wood-Cloonan, Tomas kept Conan his regular size in King Conan.

It's a nice wrap-up to the Dark Horse saga, but I'm still sad that the King & Vizier story didn't have a proper conclusion. Also, why the introduction of the pict witch have NOT been included in ANY of the tomes??? That two-issue arc could have been put on front of King Conan with ease! I'm kind of obsessed with Conan right now, and I'm trying to collect all the comics I missed ten years ago. I won't touch the Wood-Cloonan run, not even with a stick. I have also ruled out "Conan the Slayer" because it ended on a cliffhanger. However, I'm on the fence about stuff like "Conan the avenger" and the one-shots (People of the black circle, The book of Thoth, Jewels of Gwahlur...)

It's so annoying about Conan the Slayer, the title had recovered its footing, just not its sales.
The two adaptation minis are good, Jewels more so because you get a legend doing his take. POTBC was good, just a little short, probably should've been another two issues. If you've seen the Star Wars prequels, you can pass on Book of Thoth.

I've finally bought the "Conan the avenger" books and I'm enjoying them A LOT. The scripts are so great that I'm willing to forget how weird and unfinished the art looks.
I've also bought "Phantoms of the Black Coast" but I'm not liking it very much. Also, I'm still pissed that there is a lot of material from the original "Conan the legend" series that are not collected in ANY hardcovers (including the King Conan short story that introduces the pict witch from "Wolves").

I like it especially how they expand Natalas backtory and background but the drawings are sometimes TOOO sketchy for my own taste.

I'm always hearing good stuff about the writing. Unfortunately, the art has been a huge obstacle for me when it comes to this book.

Ok, I'm done reading. This is my review:
-Conan the Avenger was amazing, art notwithstanding.
-Phantoms of the Black Coast was rubbish. I sold it almost immediately after reading it.
-People of the Black Circle were fine. This is, after all, my favorite Howard story. But it was definitely one or two issues too short, and it suffered for it.
Considering that I already have all the "the legend", "the cimmerian" and "King Conan" titles... Is there anything else from Dark Horse that I should check?

Overall pretty good, it's a shame they never got to finish that run. I think there's only about 12 issues. Relatively easy to track down, at least where I live.

I have bought "The Spear and other stories". Unfortunately, I fear this will be my last Dark Horse comic book. I'm still sad we never got a proper Conan & Belit story (even if it's not a direct adaptation).

"The spear and other stories" is AMAZING! Excellent script and excellent art. I'm very surprised this collection didn't had a proper release in Spain, while crap like "Phantoms of the Black Coast" had a hardcover edition.
