More info, they're looking at a 5 year window to do things, asking a certain New Zealander if he'd like to executive produce and is looking to possibly spend (cue Dr. Evil) one BILL-ion dollars!

If the TV show is looking for a place to develop, this might be an avenue to think about. There would have to be some tinkering around to tie things together a little more (for all the talk about the Silmarils, only one of the three really is ever in play). It's also a shame the Lost Road never really developed because the Second Age is woefully represented apart from Akallabeth and one of the Unfinished Tales. But overall, it's the final piece of a 100 year old puzzle finally put in place. Well done, CT. As a prospective viewer of the TV series that sounds appearing. Apart from reading The Hobbit and the Aragorn portion of The Two Towers I haven't read a lick of JRRT. Tried to get into Fellowship of the Ring but just couldn't get through the opening pages. I already know what happens in the Third Age, but haven't a clue as to what happened during the first two. That area does seem ripe for the picking. I think that would be a better avenue than telling pastiche tales set in the Third Age for sure. That approach seems to work well for related projects such as video games (like Shadow of Mordor, which is actually pretty cool), but I don't think it would be a sustainable, long-term approach.

That approach seems to work well for related projects such as video games (like Shadow of Mordor, which is actually pretty cool), but I don't think it would be a sustainable, long-term approach. The First Age stories are always referred to as the "Three Great Tales", but the problem is, as Cole Thornton said to Nels McCleod: There's a fourth. The Tale of Earendil is actually the joining point the tales are missing. His mother comes from Beren and Luthien's line while he's the son of Tuor and his battle against Morgoth and Ungoliant ends the First Age. But what weapon does he use? Turin's Black Sword which gains revenge for Hurin's line. But apart from the few sketches included the books released, he never went back and fleshed it out into any longer form. That's why when you read these three, there feels like there's something missing. You'd think it's something more with the Silmarils, but this is it. If the Silmarillion is ever done, this aspect of the story needs to be played up to give the Children of Hurin its proper ending. There's one instance where Tuor unknowingly sees Turin racing through the woods but doesn't interact with him. I tried coming up with a scene where Tuor and Vonowe get protection from Turamber's outlaws for a bit, so the stories get tied together a bit more. But it's hard to believe in 50 years, Tolkien never did anything more with the story than what we have.

That matches a rumour I read on on reddit. Over there they were suggesting it will be based around the forging of the rings of power.

BTW-This bit of news certainly hasn't been played up but the official name of the show is Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. So it'll mainly deal with the creation of the rings and I suppose at some point the fall/drowning of Numenor since it takes place during the 2nd Age, the one period Tolkien didn't do a long form, stand alone story for. Fingers crossed they try to keep it close to the spirit of the books.
Edit: here's the teaser

You have to hand it to them, this is an interesting way to introduce the characters www.cbr.com/lord-of-rings-rings-of-power-character-posters/I wonder if it's even possible to create a "Rings of Power" volume similar to the ones Christopher did with the First Age tales. I don't think there's enough there to create a narrative apart from the Second Age section in the Silmarillion and maybe some things from the appendicies and other material. Be interesting to see, I'll probably do a dig through the regular books before taking a look in the History of Middle Earth collections.

This should be awesome and I hope they don't drop the ball by incongruously shoehorning too much of modern politics into Tolkien's creation. Be interested to see what you find re Second Age narratives. I wonder if that was what attracted them to use the Second Age - more scope for them to carve out their own narratives within the general backdrop Tolkien established?

They definitely staked out a challenge for themselves since this was the era he least developed. The forging of the Rings, the drowning of Numenor and the final alliance against Sauron are the main events and he didn't write one specific story about any of them. The Lost Road was the closest and that was very unfinished. I'm all for it...IF they avoid the very things you mention. We supposedly have yet another story with a female lead character I guess in order to make up for the lack of them in the other stories (closest you have is Luthien).

Is the Critical Drinker wrong or has he been proved correct too many times in the past? Nah, It'll be fine.
