Val - The Chinese love World of Warcraft. That's the reason the movie did well there, they know the property and it's still popular there. This was a once in a lifetime occurence. Unless they do Warcraft 2, I don't see any other US properties underperforming here and being blockbusters in China or other overseas countries, not to this extent.
In the US Warcraft has cooled off. The game was at its peak during the Wrath of the Lich King and Cataclysm days. Those were years ago.
World of Warcraft (or 'vanilla' as some call it) The Burning Crusade (first expansion) Wrath of the Lich King Cataclysm Mists of Panderia Warlords of Draenor (current expansion) Legion (forthcoming)
I used to play a lot, but now I'm alright with just following the lore. Just don't have the time for the grindfest.

Hi, Jason -
OK, I'll buy that, although I still say that when you've got an established fan base, that gets your foot in the door, but it's no guarantee that the film will be a monster hit. But imho anything in the fantasy/action/adventure genre(s) is likely to be popular in China, whereas many of that ilk have not been all that big in North America, especially recently. The problem that I see with Conan is that it's going to be produced by Universal, and they haven't done all that well with some of their recent efforts at rebooting. As examples, I am pretty sure that Dracula Untold and I, Frankenstein were both rather disappointing performers.
I'll do a bit more reading in boxofficemojo in particular, and I think I can demonstrate that fantasy/action/adventure films tend to do well in China, even when they may do lacklustre business in North America.
But for now - it's Val's bedtime! Gotta get my beauty rest! LOL!

It's good movie. Not a great one but nowhere near a disaster.
Even before the release it seemed like the director was trying to do a bit of damage control by revealing that he cut 40 minutes out of the film before release. It definitely feels like it could use some fleshing out and a bit of breathing room to let the world really sink.
Technically it's very impressive. The orc animation may be the best CGI I've ever seen.

Sounds like it might be worth waiting for the extended edition. 40 minutes is a pretty huge chunk.

The Griffin and the Orcs made nice eye candy. Good job of painting Orcs over human bodies. Now does anyone doubt that a Conan movie could feature a body builder painted onto a good actor, like maybe Clint Eastwood, and a stunt double for the athletic stuff?
The acting was fair to mediocre. All the better actors were playing orcs.
