Arthur Machen's "The Shining Pyramid" and REH's "The Little People" are discussed. Picts are depicted. Nice one! I think the REH-Machen connection is often overlooked, particularly in the Bran stories. I think it is the reason WOTE is set in the "fens of the West." There are no fens in the west (they are in the east) but I think Howard wanted to set the action in the home of the Worms in Wales /the Welsh Borders. There was a considerable Roman presence in Wales at the time (though the actual date of WOTE may be open to discussion). And Machen himself was born in Caerlon, home to a huge Roman fort, which also housed baths and its own amphitheatre. The Tower of Trajan is fictitious, AFAIK, but I wonder if REH was referencing Isca / Caerlon? For more thoughts on WOTE, see Ep53 of the Innsmouth Book Club podcast
