What do you consider the best comic book adaptation of a Robert E Howard Conan tale?
We have been fortunate with some excellent adaptations with great writers and artists.
From the good old days at Marvel, we have the great Roy Thomas, John Buscema, Barry Windsor-Smith, Frank Brunner, Alfredo Alcala, Tony Dezuniga, Ernie Chan etc.
Or maybe you prefer a Dark Horse adaptation? An adaptation by Kurt Busiek and Cary Nord? Or a Tim Truman and Tomas Giorello adaptation?
No Conanised adaptations please. For example like the El Borak story 'Three-Bladed Doom' by REH that L. Sprague Decamp Conanised in to the 'Flame Knife' and was adapted in the SSOC 31-32 by Thomas, Buscema and Dezuniga. Only the adaptations that were written by Robert E Howard as a Conan Story.

I thought the SSOC adaptation of AWSBB was better than the original story in a number of ways. There was less telling and more showing... Thaug looked kind of dumb, though.

Yes, Barry Smith`s is so damn good. He should have kept his pace on Conan. It is just a shame he stopped drawing Conan just when he became an all time master.

Xuthal of the Dusk, The Tower of the Elephant, The Devil in Iron, Iron Shadows in the Moon, Red Nails, Pool of the Black One and The Scarlet Citadel were the most faithful adaptations done by Marvel Comics.
The best DH's ones were, IMO, The Frost Giant's Daughter, The God in the Bowl and The Tower of the Elephant.

As much as I admired BWS later CONAN work (Red Nails) I have to give it overall to Big John Buscema. He captured the scenery and ferocity of Conan better in comic book form.

Smith's Red Nails or one of the early Buscema/Alcala collaborations in SSoC, when both artists were fully committed to the cause - probably Iron Shadows In The Moon. The Thomas/Neal Adams Zamboula adaption could've been great, if Adams had been able/allowed to finish the artwork on his own - the one that got away! ...... That's pretty much my view.

Red nails by Thomas and BWS was great but my all time favorite is the SSOC adaptation of Beyond the Black River. Not a too popular opinion of course but I have a sentimental attachment to that one.
