Must feel terrible to be the producer of The Marvels right now. Not only are they not making any money...but they are coming out of this fiasco MINUS millions. Lol.
The big 100 seems like a realistic goal. I thought Minus One was going to exit theatres yesterday, but Toho just keeps extending the run.
And even more sobering for Hollywood is that Toho apparently said "15 million? I wish we'd had a budget of 15 million." Seems to suggest he was working from something closer to 12 or thereabouts.
Hollywood is crashing and burning right now. They are dumb and slow, so it will be awhile before they retract their hand from the flames. Or maybe the empire will burn to the ground as producers become too timid to produce 100 million blockbusters from repeated finical failure. I hope Disney keeps stoking those flames until it burns its own legs right from beneath its self.

Their failures are palpable right now, especially with Disney in just how much reports of financial failures came out of 2023. I want to see actual, physical signs of their self-induced destruction though- like the Disney parks closing down or downsizing. Anything like that.

Well they shut down that astronomically overpriced Star Wars hotel at quite a loss. I doubt we’ll see a whole park shut down anytime soon, but that was a major physical sign of their being wildly out of touch. The fact they had not one but two bombs for the Christmas season is as blatant a sign as you can get. The fact it took Elemental practically six weeks before people figured out there’s nothing really wrong with it is also a sig. people don’t trust them now. I do have to say Echo’s been pretty good. It feels like a story set in a different environment rather than a forced diversity exercise, which is positive.

Disney are currently being sued by several investors, who have seen their share prices tumble in recent years. Investor Nelson Peltz has teamed up with ex Disney exec Ike Perlmutter* in an attempt to get Disney back on track. The Disney board are fighting against this. Imho, if Nelson and Ike succeed then Disney might have a shot at recovering - if they don't then Disney will continue to decline.
Note: an activist investor is one who buys shares in a company with a view to 'actively' steering its future to help increase that value of the companies stocks. As opposed to a passive investor. It does not mean activist in the sense of what is causing Disney so many problems right now. *Ike Perlmutter and John Favreau were key figures in building the early MCU.

Moved these posts out of the Godzilla thread.
Speaking of Nelson Peltz he was on cnbc this morning. The Disney leadership team has underperformed the S&P 500 by every measure.

That stock has taken a beating. It was up around $130 when Disney+ launched. It’s been hanging around the $90 range for years.

Thanks for the new thread Jason. We did ramble down a bit of a sidetrack in the other one.

This will be a bit much for casual reading but here is the link to Trian and Nelson Peltz website campaign to Restore the Magic at Disney:

I think that's spot on Jason, though I don't think Disney itself will ever benefit from the lesson hopefully the smaller more independent studios will.
There's a degree to which Terry Matalas did this to a lesser degree with the recent season three of Picard, he had a lower budget than any of the other seasons most of which was paying for the wages of the old NG crew but he pulled off the best series of nu Trek.
Critical Drinker did a great vid on the main causes of Hollywood (esp Disney) budget bloat recently, plus offers some solutions:
