The whole Black Stone thing is wearing out its welcome for me. Using it in the first arc of the new comic series was a cool callback to an old Howard story. Having it turn up over and over its becoming tired. It do not need, or want, grand overarching connected plots in a Conan story. Wrap this stuff up and move on before we end up with some godawful "Black Stone Trilogy" set of doorstops. Couldn't agree more. It feels a lot like the short Marvel run recently where everything was tied to that blood witch, even if it was just having those two creepy kids appear in the last frame of a story.

I read "bound in black stone" over the weekend (that collects the Conan the Barbarian #0 to 4) and at the end Jeffrey Shanks wrote an article about Howard's "shared universe" (I don't know if it was published in the respective Conan the Barbarian comics). It felt to me they plan to create an Howardverse (the intervention of Brule in the story being an example)

On the one hand, I think it would mean we get some work about characters that otherwise might be overlooked or not get a lot of material about themselves. On the other, I really don't like the crossover stuff, like Marvel's Serpent Crown, where characters from multiple eras get stuck into the same story. Conan and Kull/Brule is fine and makes sense. Conan and Bran Mak Morn would be alright. Conan and El Borak would be kooky.

Less said about Serpent Crown and the other interactions with the spandex brigade the better LOL.

I suppose as long as it keeps people interested in Conan and Howard, and therefore keeps new material coming, more power to it.

I see limited cross-overs e.g., with Dark Agnes teaming up with Von Kalmbach & Sonya of Rogatino or Von Kalmbach being involved in the events described in the Black Stone with the Ottomans. I can't see El Borak and Steve Costigan sharing an adventure even if they lived at the same time and in Asia. El Borak would have no patience for the (lovable) fool! Maybe a story starting in Asia with El Borak and continuing with some REH detectives (Harrison? Brent Kirby et Butch Gorman?) after the vilain escaped? I could also see places being re-used, e.g. Solomon Kane finding in the heart of Africa the ruins of Xuchotl or Cormac Fitzgeoffrey sacking the Shadizar that was later on visited by El Borak (that story being mentioned by REH himself in a Kirby O'Donnell story). Could be fun but... how often would we want to read such stories?

In a sense I think all of Howard's work is interconnected to some degree, or at least none of his work is exclusive of any of the rest of it.
I'd be interested in as much of it as they were willing to make.

Have you all forgotten about this cover already? We'll find out next month just how deep the rabbit hole goes...
