Very interesting. I guess one big issue is the market: there is only a very small market for short stories these days (Scott Oden really looked into it for instance) while fantasy novels "have to" be a trilogy of 1,000 pages each.

Trad pub prefers series and epic fantasy still rules the roost it seems, but first time and lesser known authors have to be more careful with their opening salvo. For them a one off novel of 80 - 120 words, but with series potential is generally preferred from what I've encountered.
Expanding the short story markets and some middle ground in the novel arena seems to be required. But how to bring it about outside of self pub and crowdfunding?
