Stumbled on this one at Amazon the other day and oh boy. The Budget Sauron on the cover should be a warning that we're far from Howard's conception of the Hyborian Age. Right off the bat we have a Cimmerian named Benhargan, who is a "Frontier Ranger" fighting Picts. The Frontier Rangers have a number of Cimmerians in their ranks, something that would be remarkable in the Hyborian Age, where Conan's people are rarely seen beyond their borders. There are also "Vanir, men from Kush, and even Valkyries from Valk, the city-state in the northwest by the sea, populated exclusively by powerful warrior women". There's also mentions of "Aqualonia" (author's spelling). Not long after that we hear of the "ruins of Valmalia along the Black River". So, who built that city? Is it Pre-Cataclysmic? Some bad guy a few pages later wants the Pictish tribes to help him build a "new Atlantis". Good luck with that.
It's pretty baffling because while some of the Hyborian references are accurate, some are so distorted as to be almost unrecognizable.
