The film was fortunate in its first-timers, as it was Ireland's first film and also the first film for Renee Zellwegger as Novalyne Price. It was also the first effort for the screenwriter, Michael Scott Myers, who also produced the film. I have read that Myers was a former student of Novalyne Price's, though I can't confirm that. But when you think of the odds against film projects being made, it's really remarkable that this was completed and as fine a film as it is.
(BTW, as a trivial matter that may be of some interest, only a year or two prior to the making of The Whole Wide World, Vincent d'Onofrio, who played REH, had a cameo as Orson Welles in Tim Burton's movie, Ed Wood. His voice was dubbed by someone more resembling Welles's booming baritone, but physically he was a dead ringer for the drop-dead gorgeous Welles of the early 40's.)

Yes , very sad news. I'm sure the showing of the film at Cross Plains in June , with Michael in attendance , will be very poignant.
