I guess it is a little like the recent Jim Zub run at Marvel; a vast improvement on the Aaron run, according to some at least, but not reflected in the sales.
We get the same thing after Truman & Giorello leave the main book after declining sales, but Thomas, Wood, Lente could not change that and neither could the improved Bunn and Davila run.

If Roy Thomas returning for 12 issues couldn't fix it I doubt anything could have stopped an inevitable end to the DH Conan era. I'm both surprised and glad it lasted as long as it did. And since there was no new Conan content since 2016 I was glad that Marvel was getting the rights back to the character in 2019. I just hope they don't end up doing the same thing by putting all Conan titles on indefinite hiatus and end up only printing omninbus and TPBs for a couple of years.

The last issue prior to Woods , Conan Road of Kings , sold 10,727 copies. The first Wood issue of CtB sold 20,569 , the final issue #25 sold 10,736. So pretty well back to where it was when Roy's run ended. Thanks Terry. So were some Wood fans pulled into buying that run? If so, looks like they didn't stay long I'm pretty sure the sales were higher for 2 reasons. For one, Brian Wood is a famous writer and as mentioned before, most of his fans would pick up a new title he was writing. The second reason, and also one of the reasons I think Dark Horse decided to publish their Conan run in segments (Cimmerian, Barbarian, Road of Kings, etc.) is not only to mark the start of a new period in Conan's life but also because statistically, a new issue 1 would sell better than an issue 88 or something like that. The new readers pulled out of buying the title after the first couple of issues and some of the Brian Wood/ Conan fans stopped buying later on down the road. I'm actually surprised road of kings didn't have better sales because it was really good in my opinion.

I've been reading through the DH run for the first time this month after a few failed attempts over the years. It has definitely has its ups and downs. I'm in the middle of Road of Kings now, and was really surprised to realize half-way through that it's Roy Thomas behind the wheel. I've read most of his classic stories, and would would never have guessed.
I really, really liked the issues Tomas Giorello drew. Best Conan art I've seen outside of old school Savage Sword. And Iron Shadows is one of my favorite original Conan stories, so that was a treat.
But in the end, I'll take classic Marvel Conan over the DH stuff I've read any day. I'm so glad they're putting it all in Omnis!

And I completely agree, Giorello is by far the best artist Dark Horse had and nothing can change my opinion on that.

The weird thing was it was an issue that wouldn’t have needed addressing if they’d done the stories in the order Dale had them in his chronology. They did create a great story sequence but it did necessitate getting him from the Vilayat to the sea whereas the Dark Storm sequence had him going in a straight line, which in that context made more sense.

Exactly. By using that chronology they didn't utilize Roy Thomas' full potential.

I did not really like much of the Dark Horse Conan. But, I did, eventually like Busiek Nord run it was different and a fresh interpretation of the Cimmerian. Once the fill in issues by other writers became the norm I lost interest. The same goes for the Truman Giorello run, it took til the Hour off the Dragon adaptation for me to appreciate the art of Giorello. His earlier issues just looked too Buscema inspired without the natural looking characters, Giorello's art seemed a little too awkward for my taste. But as I noted earlier that changed during the HotD adaptation.
The Roy Thomas run was disappointing, it was nice to see him back, but nothing like his work in his prime (he's still the best Conan pastiche writer). The decline obviously continued with the Brian Wood run, the art in the following Van Lente run did not help either. By the time we got the vastly improved Bunn/Davila run it was too late.
Unfortunately, now we have to tolerate the new Marvel Conan comics with absolutely no direction or consistency.

Wow, you all aren't exaggerating about how bad the Wood run is. I'm half-way through and I'm not anxious to finish. He clearly doesn't know the character at all.

I remember Roy Thomas stating somewhere that he hadn't written Conan for so many years prior to Road of Kings that it took him a few issues to get familiarized with the character again. I also started off by disregarding the Dark Horse run but once I read the Kurt Busiek and Cary Nord issues I was really glad I did. I actually Liked Giorello's art from the beginning but I see where you're coming from. I think the Biggest example of "Buscema inspired without the natural looking characters" would actually be Claudio Castellini's Conan from the 1997 mini-series. It's definitely more Buscema inspired than Giorello's art but it goes without saying that I'd prefer The art in Conan the CImmerian than the Marvel 90s mini-series. Actually come to think of it, Current Marvel Conan is definitely an improvement compared to what they were doing with the character in the late 90s.

If you hop ahead from #12 (the best non-adapted issue) to #22, you'll miss Mirko Colak's great art, but also the lunch tossing at a baby deer. A high point and low point at the same time. Then there's the Last Temptation of Conan in #18 best left forgotten. If you do issues #1-3, #12 and #22-25, it's...tolerable. There are issues, but nothing like all the "original" stories.

Yeah, I have no desire to read the CtB stuff from the 90s. Then again, concerning artists that draw like Buscema, I'd love to see Roberto De La Torre on a monthly Conan book

By the way, is there any news on more omnibus collections coming out that reprint the Conan stories from Dark Horse?
On the website of the German publisher for Marvel, Panini, the Busiek omnibus is listed as "Conan Dark Horse Collection Bd. 1" (Bd. = Vol.) in the announcement area (it will come out late October here). This looks like they are expecting more to come?

Heard nothing about another one , just TPB's at present. _Perhaps_Marvel put that out to test the waters for when they complete the old Marvel Omnibus' to see if there was much of a demand and then decide whether to continue.
