Al Harron and Jeff Shanks talk about Robert E. Howard's historical fiction at Howard Days 2014.

Roy Krenkel would be 99yrs old today. His intro to DMG's Sowers of the Thunder is still considered a classic. Here's some of his art from "Sowers" and the subsequent volume, The Road of Azrael...

My paperback copy of Sowers of the Thunder is much worn with use and love. When people ask about "that guy who wrote the Conan stories ", this is the book I'm most likely to lend to them to open their eyes a little. Quite possibly my favorite paperback collection.

I'm on my second paperback of SotT. Which edition do you have?

Cool books that were common on the racks back in the 70's. But Sowers of the Thunder is the one I like best.

The links above now work again. However, it appears that Damon Sasser is no longer running the site and the current proprieter just bought the URL and is using the site to generate clicks. All art and attributions to the blog posters have been stripped. While I'm not wasting time getting too worked up over this -- Mr. Sasser could've reached out to others in REH fandom and something would've been arranged -- for those who wish to view the posts in their original entirety, click here: web.archive.org/web/20150326075329/http://www.rehtwogunraconteur.com:80/?p=26850It's Part Seven. Scroll down and click "Part One" and then you can click forward in sequence. I wish it was simpler, but that is the only way to work it that I've found. I have not located parts Eight and beyond yet.

Yep. I've always loved "last stand" battles and "Red Blades" has a great one. BTW, it would appear that Bob (or Tevis) got about all of the info for that tale from either Harold Lamb's Genghis Khan: Emperor of All Men or this story... My guess, for several reasons, is the latter. Not read this one yet, I'm still looking for the Grant Edition. Have you picked this up? I think you'll dig it.

I have read a few of the stories in the Swords from the East - just 3 yarns to go in that book, The Road of the Giants, The Three Palladins and The Book of the Tiger. Recently, I have also been diving into the Cossack stories just to break it up a bit.

"They may not seem real to the readers; but Gottfried [von Kalmbach] and his mistress Red Sonya seem more real to me than any other character I've ever drawn."
-- Robert E. Howard to H. P. Lovecraft, 6 March, 1933
