A pretty good BBC show on the Zaporozhian Cossacks. There is very little in it that conflicts with Harold Lamb's Cossack tales, which is where REH got the vast majority of his info on the Cossacks.

This is Kaluta's rendition of a young Conan -- circa Iron Shadows in the Moon -- but he seems a bit too wiry/gaunt, IMO. The horseman would make a good Hyperborean, Kothian or even Turanian who'd joined the kozaki during the formative years of the "Free Companions" in the decades before Conan joined their ranks. The sword, pantaloons, boots...even the tack and saddle are spot on. Are those ghostly women akin to/inspirations for the rusalka, irshi and peri of later ages? infogalactic.com/info/Rusalkainfogalactic.com/info/Irshiinfogalactic.com/info/Peri

It really jumped off the magazine rack at Red Food Store.
When I read Conan, I see him in my mind as drawn by John Buscema, but I always felt Howard envisioned him as leaner and more wirey than that.
