I watched Legend for the first time in a while and the director's cut is a huge improvement to the film, which gets better on repeat viewings for me. Everyone talks about Tim Curry's makeup but all of Rob Bottin's effects are fantastic (check out Robert Picardo as the swamp hag!). The movie manages to be more evocative of fairy tales and folklore than most others I can think of - stuff like the fickleness and danger of the fairy folk. You'd probably have to go back to stuff like Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast (an acknowledged influence by Ridley Scott) to find something similar. Maybe there are some odd Eastern European or Asian movies that work on a similar wavelength (Bride With White Hair...that's a good one...).

Saw Justice League today and mostly liked it. Of course the critics hated it, they've hated Snyder for a long time and he's an easy target with his unconventional style. The cuts (nearly an hour, by some accounts) were noticeable in places and I dearly hope there was an Ultimate Edition for it like there was for B v S. I wish WB would release a whole Snyder film in theaters instead of always hobbling them with cuts (Watchmen, Sucker Punch, B v S were all better in their extended versions). That said, this was more enjoyable than the theatrical version of B v S, with some very satisfying scenes towards the end that I will not spoil.
Oh, and DC has embraced the mid-credit scene. Stay all the way through.

First, it was Stranded. Then it was Starship Apocalypse. Then Dragons of Camelot. For the past few years, I've rung in the new year by watching the worst movies I could get my hands on. This year, it's Vikingdom: Fall of an Empire.
- The opening credits subtitle it The Blood Eclipse. And some online sources call it The Red Eclipse. Quality right off the top! Also, no empires fall during the movie.
- We learn this takes place in 793 AD. Despite this, we see numerous stone castles of the kind not yet being built in that era. Also, medieval swords and Norman helmets on the Vikings, as well as those damn horned helmets no Viking wore.
- Thor is the villain here. At least he has myth-accurate red beard. He also makes lightsaber noises whenever he uses his powers.
- We meet Eirick, our designated protagonist, in an unconvincing snowy forest, hunting an unconvincing CGI bear. I note that his arrows have no fletchings. None of the arrows in the movie do.
- It's a sign of how assured and confident this movie is that we get the plot explained twice in 15 minutes. Also, Thor needs to do this ritual at "the Henge of Stones". A sacred oak tree might be better, considering Norse myth.
- Gee, I wonder if the hooded character will turn out to be a woman oh look it is and is she an Action Girl oh yes she is. Bonus points for her wearing a bra and absolutely no armor at all.
- Also, the color-grading in this movie is just awful. It makes several characters appear to have green hair. Speaking of hair, I've never seen so many wigs and fake beards. I guess no actor wanted to change their style for this.
- The gates of Helheim are underwater for some reason. Eirick's sword doesn't weigh him down when he dives. And when he approaches Helheim he encounters horses thrashing around underwater. UNDERWATER HORSES I DON'T EVEN
- Escaping the UNDERWATER HORSES, Eirick reaches Helheim, which is full of kryptonite, a bad CGI hound and zombies. The actor playing Eirick's dead dad gives the best performance in the movie, despite heavy zombie makeup.
- The Horn he's looking for is guarded by a WALL OF NAKED GOLDEN WOMEN.
Okay, that would probably stop most guys.
- BTW, there's a Chinese guy in this, Yang. And of course he knows Kung Fu. Even Indonesian-produced movies have these stereotypes, I guess. His background is never explained at all. At least he's pretty good in the fight scenes.
- Forgot the big fight scene in the falling snow where most of the Vikings are fighting shirtless. But I guess it's not that cold because there's no visible breath or anything.
- Eirick's father isn't really his father gee I wonder where this stunning revelation might be leading? If you guessed "We will rule the world as father and son" give yourself a cookie. No wonder Thor makes lightsaber noises.
- Worst line of dialogue: "Some of our brothers sided with your brother, Sire!"
- Oh, you did NOT just rip off that bit from 300 where the camera follows the warriors and speed-ramps the action for emphasis. Action Girl has a different weapon each time we see her: sword, bow, whip and axe. Never see her switching weapons.
- The closing credits call the movie Fall of an Empire. There is a godawful metal song playing, with lyrics that sound like: "ding DONG ding DONG".
- The presence of Conan Stevens in the cast only served to remind me that I could have been watching my new Conan the Barbarian Blu-Ray instead of this.
- Consulting Wikipedia, I see that somehow, Vikingdom: Insert Random Subtitle Here scored a theatrical release, where it earned a whopping $550,000 on a budget of $15 million. $15 million. And they still couldn't get the right kind of helmets.
