Just saw "The Legend of Tarzan. It is the best Tarzan movie I have ever seen, and the truest to ERB. It is the first movie to acknowledge that Tarzan's apes, the Mangani, were neither chimp nor gorilla.

Jason Momoa looks good as Aquaman.

Comic-Con Trailer for Justice League. Jason Momoa looks good as Aquaman. I honestly liked the Wonder Woman trailer more. Momoa does look pretty badass, though.

Now that I'm nearly done watching the classic Universal Horror movies, I might check out some of the older Golden Age stuff like PRC. I've noticed that the DVD seller who visits the local cons always has lots of public domain cra--- er, stuff at reasonable prices. Hi, Almuric - Not all PD stuff is pure junk. Sometimes there are major studio films for which for some reason the honchos neglected to renew the copyrights. I believe that all the serials that were released during the '30's and 40's are in the public domain. Of course they were generally aimed at kids, but sometimes they have some redeeming qualities, like having Bela. :-) Other examples of major studio films which are in the public domain don't occur to me right off-hand, but if you are interested, I could probably dig up a few by doing a bit of research. Yes, if you look at the DVD's produced by reputable independent firms like Sinister Cinema, you will find a number of PD titles, a lot more than just Lugosi. Being a huge Bela Lugosi fan, I think my favourite PD film has got to be White Zombie. There is a copyright or two claimed for that movie, because the Roan Group (and later another firm, I believe) restored it. But the basic unrestored film is PD, and not surprisingly it's also a Poverty Row film. Despite major lacks in two of the starring roles, John Harron and Madge Bellamy, who had been big silent stars but hadn't mastered the art of talking pictures, the film has some otherwise good acting by supporting players like Joseph Cawthorn and Robert Frazier, and I think it features the most masterful performance by Bela in a truly diabolical role. There are lots of chills there and good fun. It was a huge hit when it was released in 1932. Valeria Spirit the Invisible Ghost is one of his very best...I think that was the title...better than White Zombie IMO but both are cool and Devil Bat is awesome as well.

Oh yeah, not everything in the PD is crap. Just . . . a fair amount. There are some treasures among the trash. White Zombie is something I'll have to see one day, when I can find a nice enough copy. I'll never forget the first time I tried to watch White Zombie, it was on a New Jersey cable access channel in the mid to late 80s that seemed to have a lot of PD films in their library (I had watched Africa Screams there for the first time, odd that a PD film like that was not part of WPIX's Abbott & Costello Sunday morning rotation, which made me resort to this channel. They did eventually show the 2 Warners PD A&C films, which were originally on WCBS, but never Africa Screams). The film starts and within 10 minutes the picture was so dark and the sound so garbled, the transmission stopped dead. They did the usual "Technical difficulties, please stand by" for a few minutes, then someone announced "Due to difficulties beyond our control, we will not be able to proceed with the showing of today's film." and they switched to some other programming! That must have been one bad print! Finally saw it a few years ago on TCM's Halloween fest and it looked great.

The Great Wall
Looks silly, probably controversial, but will probably be so bad it'll be fun.

Just saw the trailer on Australian TV ahead of next week's cinema release for Ben Hur, and they're not pushing the religious angle at all. Maybe it'll be different in other countries. ...... The latest US commercials are pretty much ignoring it as well, going right for the good old revenge aspect of the story and hinting there may be a chariot race involved. However, some radio commercials this week have quotes from people involved with religion and spiritual matters (Rick Warren for one). I guess they're aiming for two different audiences and hoping at least one shows up.

Well considering the last big Biblical epics weren't exactly major hits, I wouldn't be surprised of the suits wanted to keep the Jesus bits under wraps.
