One hundred years ago today, Merritt's novelette, "The Moon Pool", was published in the pages of All-Story Magazine. It was an instant smash hit with the readership and All-Story's editor immediately requested a sequel from Merritt. The novelette and its sequel (they were quickly combined into one novel) were easily one of the most influential SFF tales of the pulp era. Lovecraft considered the novelette one of the best weird tales ever written and REH likely read the combo novel. The Tellers of Weird Tales website has a great cover gallery devoted to The Moon Pool: tellersofweirdtales.blogspot.com/2015/05/a-merritt-art-gallery-complete-moon-pool.htmlCover by Joseph Clement Coll.

A. Merritt died 75 years ago today. His cause of death was a sudden heart attack. Stress and overwork were likely part of the problem. That said, he was rich and one of the most dominant figures in the SFF/weird fiction field of that time. Ol' Abe was fond of bourbon and other spirits. Feel free to raise a glass to his shade. www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/ea.cgi?613

Right on, bud! The Face In the Abyss is a Merritt novel that often gets overlooked, but it's a ripping yarn as well. It's got dinosaur-riders, spider-folk and a Dark God who weeps golden tears--plus sword-fights. We know REH read it and Morgan Holmes gives it two thumbs up.

Those are the editions I have! Excellent summary, Deuce, right to the point Yeah, the "Ishtar" with the Rosa cover was the first edition I ever bought. I still have it, but the Paizo edition is the best text-wise and illo-wise, IMO. The Horne cover for "Dwellers" did a lot to make up for his crap cover for "ishtar". That cover pisses me off every time I see it.

Back in the 90s, this one was on the bookstore shelves next to the Dwellers in the Mirage one I got. For some reason I never ended up getting this one, even though it was available. I ended up waiting then they disappeared and I had to get them in used bookstores. I may have to get the Pazio since I have 2 SoI and both have pages ripped out (one of them the last page!)

That's the one. WAY on the cheesy side (and inaccurate), IMO. That turban drives me up the wall. The Avon edition you have has edited text. The Paizo edition (still on sale at Paizo, BTW) has the full text (which really does make a difference) and every Finlay illo ever done for TSoI. A must-buy, IMO, despite me not being crazy about the cover (which is still better than the one above). IMO, Erik Mona should've gone with the Finlay illos and the highly-congruent cover painting done by Fabian in the '70s. What could've been...
