I picked up the trade paperback of Death's Black Riders from Dark Horse, so I figured I'd set up a discussion thread for Kane's appearances in the medium. The comic itself wasn't bad, though, even if the riders themselves were far different from what I had imagined.

Scott Allie's (sp?) writing never impressed me. Guevara is an excellent artist, however.

My only issue with the art is that I couldn't tell what was happening in a few panels, especially when it was raining.

My only issue with the art is that I couldn't tell what was happening in a few panels, especially when it was raining. I should say, "Mario is an excellent artist now." I thought his SK work was good, but you should check out some of his more recent stuff, like Nevsky. After seeing that, I'd like to see him tackle Conan. Not wanting to derail this, so... I always thought Weiss' SK art for SSoC was pretty cool.

Scott's intentions were good but starting off adaptation two fragments and a minor story set the series off on the wrong foot. By the time they got around to Red Shadows and Skulls in the Stars, they were deep into the "yeah, we'll do the Howard stories but...:" mindset and it as nowhere near as good as it could have been. Scott and Mario should have started with Red Shadows and went from there, they would have done a better job than the team they had doing it, though I think it was more editorial's weak hand at that point leading it astray.

Eh, I don't mind them adapting fragments and telling original stories in theory.

Scott was trying to replicate what they'd done on Conan and do things chronologically. I'm not sure what solid evidence there is that the Black Forest stories come before Red Shadows. So there was 5 issues for Castle of the Devil and 4 for Death's Black Riders/Rattle of Bones. From a marketing stand point of establishing a brand, it doesn't pull the readers in. At least with Kull they started with Shadow Kingdom but went astray with other issues. Plus I'm of the mind Death's Black Riders isn't necessarily an unfinished story, but that's a subject for another time.

I've just re-read Dark Horse's Death's Black riders / a rattle of bones and I'm really not a fan. For me it's both the story and the art. 1/ the story: I was pretty excited to read a "new" adventure of SK but I've not be thrilled by what they did with REH's original work. Basically DBR is not much more than a very long fight scene. 2/ the art: like a previous poster I often wondered what on Earth was happening, notably because the colours are limited to shades of purple. Plus the aliens-like creatures with many mouths really did not do it for me, the more so since in Castle of the Devil there already were creatures with many mouths. I don't know whether it's an obsession or a lack of imagination. Even Solomon looked weird to me, more like the Joker. (to put things in context I must say I'm very-old fashioned and my benchmark is Harold Foster)
