Sometimes I feel like this movie's only defender. Am I crazy to enjoy it almost as much as Escape from New York?
I mean that last shot is so memorable. I dont hark the criticism too much, Ice Cube has major charisma in this one.

While I think it could've been better, I dig it. I've heard that Kurt Russell almost got the Ice Cube part. If this had been marketed as "Ghosts of Mars: Quentin Tarantino's Grindhouse Presents" or whatever, it'd be a cult classic right now. The "Escape From New York" meets 'Precinct 13" meets "Prince of Darkness" ON MARS premise had a lot of potential. I've read that this was Carpenter's homage to Clark Ashton Smith and The Vaults of Yoh-Vombis.

I could see Rodriguez doing a cool remake. Maybe bring John in as consultant. Maybe have Kurt in there somewhere. John and Robert could collaborate on a new score. It's doable.

"Desolation" was supposed to be Snake Plissken, but "Escape from LA" didn't make its money back.
Ice cube actually really worked for me. An early, rocky performance but his charisma really carries it. And that last shot of the trailer I posted:
"Damn girl!" He replied with a smile and a slight nod of praise, as he rubbed the punished chin. "I like you already."
Punch. Cut to black. Sensational.

I'd rather have ice cube and Henstridge back for a sequel. Get the career-revived Kurt in with his eye patch, get a fresh hot face in there, and we can watch space "Rio bravo" on an even grander scale. My director, George Miller.

If this had been marketed as "Ghosts of Mars: Quentin Tarantino's Grindhouse Presents" or whatever, it'd be a cult classic right now. What I heard was that Ice Cube was originally cast in Jason Statham's role and Statham was cast as Desolation Williams, but the producers wanted the movie to have "urban appeal" so they forced Carpenter to switch the casting. I think it's entertaining, although it's lesser Carpenter for me.

I saw it on tv 8 years ago. I didn't mind it at the time though I'm not sure it will hold up
