the thing about Beowulf is nobody can really say how old it is...its likely that the earliest versions go way way back into the mists of time.
NO doubt Beowulf had many other adventures and maybe one will turn up someday written on stone!!!!

Michael Wood: In Search of Beowulf (BBC, first screened in 2009)
An interesting look at the possible origins Beowulf.
BBC description: Historian Michael Wood returns to his first great love, the Anglo-Saxon world, to reveal the origins of our literary heritage. Focusing on Beowulf and drawing on other Anglo-Saxon classics, he traces the birth of English poetry back to the Dark Ages.
Travelling across the British Isles from East Anglia to Scotland and with the help of Nobel prize-winning poet Seamus Heaney, actor Julian Glover, local historians and enthusiasts, he brings the story and language of this iconic poem to life.

Wood mentions Julian Glover's performance of Beowulf and shows a snippet. Here's another clip. Glover does a masterful job, IMO.

Well, there are references to historical people and events that indicate that it is set in the sixth century. When it was composed is uncertain, but the manuscript has been dated to some time between 975 and 1025.

This is a graphic novel adaptation of Beowulf written and illustrated by Jerry Bingham. It was a gift from one of my daughters for Father's Day.
