The time has come to talk of submitting stories to Tales From the Magician’s Skull. The magazine will be open for submissions from January 22, 2021 through April 1, 2021. This is an exceptionally polished and beautiful magazine, as well produced as any currently available--- and it only publishes Sword & Sorcery. It is, in short, an exceptionally fine place to submit a Sword and Sorcery story. And I suspect a good many of you have written, begun or thought up a story in the genre. This is me being encouraging. Write that story. Wrestle the damn thing down on paper. Rewrite it until it seems smooth, then read it out loud to yourself to prove just how wrong you can be. Hammer it into shape, polish it up, then send it in. There are so many people on this site with writing chops and a heartfelt appreciation of Sword and Sorcery that I’m dead certain that great work could come out of here. I want to read it. Here’s where to start… goodman-games.com/tftms/2020/10/20/announcing-open-call-for-sword-sorcery-fiction-for-tales-from-the-magicians-skull/Thanks for the update John.

Well I have two tales to choose from for submission that I've been hammering on quite a bit.January 22 through April 1 is plenty of time to choose one and polish it into submission. I might submit closer to the 22 so as to not overthink it.

Char-Vell, don't take this personally, but... this is a dream market of mine, so I hope the editor's in a bad mood when they read yours (lol), so mine has a better chance! Joking aside, good luck to everyone. I just really, really like the magazine; it checks TONS of blocks for me. Good short fiction, they get good art, and I love maps, so those are really cool. I'm neutral about the RPG stats, but do like the little appendix (I'm that nerd that looks up spaceships referenced in Star Wars novels, for example...) -Mick.

Fear not, mine will put them in a bad mood if they're not already. I'll have to check out a copy of the magazine. I like their Mutant Crawl Classics game. If they accept my story, maybe it will be an in for me to publish that RPG module I've been threatening to write.

Submissions close April 1st. I don't think they'll open up again until next year, so swing at that pitch.
Here's a panel that a bunch of Skull affiliates did at last weekend's Spawn of Cyclops Con in which some time is given over to talking about submissions, what kind of stories they're seeing and what kind of stories they'd like to see.
It's got more than a few awkward moments, as I don't think any of us except Goodman (and maybe Howard) has any experience with being on camera like this, but it's informative and kinda fun when we start waxing enthusiatic about sword and sorcery.

Interesting.
I sent them barbarian fiction and it was soundly rejected.

Interesting. I sent them barbarian fiction and it was soundly rejected. That’s exactly what I’m going to submit. Admittedly, that’s the only kind of S&S I’m writing at the moment...😎

Don't repeat my error: "..the story veers from wild action to detailed verbal exposition too often and too swiftly..."

Thanks John, that was a very enjoyable panel. Always good to get perspectives from the editors side of the table. I've not sent anything in yet but I may give it a shot.

A new Kickstarter for Tales From the Magician's Skull began four days ago and has already quadrupled the goal. We get to see covers for the next three issues-- Sanjulian, Ken Kelly and Didier Normand all turn in fine work, maybe the best the mag has seen thus far.
These issues will feature the beginning of an onslaught of authors new to the Skull, the fruits of the editors working through a huge pile of submissions, and are basically guaranteed to offer a mother lode of great sword and sorcery reading.
Check it out. Even if you don't want to participate in the Kickstarter you'll get a charge out of those covers...

Great to see the Magician's Skull go from strength to strength.

So it appears my Gunnolf tale has been accepted, but I have no clue what issue it will appear in. There was apparently quite a response to the open submission opportunity, and hundreds of stories were sent in, so I’m counting myself as pretty lucky. Took advantage of the Kickstarter to support the magazine and possibly create another opportunity for S&S writers out there to show off their finest tales. Long live the Skull!

Can anybody let me know what the digital copies are like? Are they just PDF files or can you download something formatted for Kindle? I gave up on paper a while ago and I like how on kindle you can make the font bigger, which is great for my eyes.
