Simply put what are the best documentaries you've ever seen?
I just watched West of Memphis (Amy Berg's documentary on the WM3). If anyone doubts that injustice can be a problem in our society this case should make anyone doubt it. This documentary (and the other paradise lost films) document the horror that three innocent teens went through when three boys were murdered. The boys in question (Damian Jason and Jessie) were basically white trash and outcasts (Jessie was also borderline retarded); as such when three children were found dead in a ditch someone had to pay. As such when Jessie was bullied into confessing the state struggled to find a motive, settling on "satanic murder". The documentary paints a heartbreaking picture of prejudice, poverty and ignorance (the police were essentially a bunch of corrupt hillbillies, the prosecutors were amoral scumbags willing to sacrifice three teenagers to advance their careers, and the people of West memphis were willing to go along with it because they were scared). The case DOES have a relatively happy ending (The kids were released 18 years later) but the man who most likely IS the real killer (Terry hobbs, the stepfather of one of the victims) PROBABLY won't ever get punished.
