Waiting for mine to arrive , Roy has covered REH in quite a few AE's over the years - worth checking them out.

Kal-El the Barbarian and the JLA Barbarians/ Elseworlds
'My idea for that one was, what if Superman had come to Earth during the Hyborian Age? Of course, it wasn't really Howard's Hyborian Age, just a generic equivalent. But DC forced me to use the entire Justice league rather than just Superman...
.... John Buscema pencilled a beautiful first issue. It looked like Conan doing Superman stunts for 20 pages. Wonderful stuff - and then that was the end of it. When John died in 2002, DC published this editorial about how great he was - and then, as far as I'm concerned, disrespected him by refusing to publish his final work. For fifteen years they've been sitting on it. I pleaded with them at the time, "His brother Sal could finish it, which John would have wanted - or you could get different artists to finish it, or whatever - but use this first issue. Get somebody to ink it, and let's finish the series." It was layouts, but semi-finished pencils really.
I don't understand the mindset that makes a big deal out of trumpeting respect and admiration for someone, then actually treats them with disrespect. It drives me up the wall.'
Roy Thomas interview, Alter Ego 139. Here's page 1 and a character sheet from John Buscema's last comic.

Bunn's covering Shadows of Zamboula and Devil in Iron. After that are Vale of Lost Women, Pool of the Black Ones, Red Nails, Black Stranger Beyond the Black River. Fragmentwise Drums of Tombalku are the only ones left. I honestly think Roy should do Red Nails. He did a good adaptation back in the 70s. I think if Slayer is profitable they'll do another series and knock out Pool Drums and Vale. That would leave the other two stories. Tim Truman could cover those hopefully (if they have him on the main title again) and that would allow them to do Conan's final adventure (that showdown with Thoth that was hinted WAY back in Conan the legend.)

in CTB 91, Roy Thomas explained that at Marvel they were 'both delighted and a bit disturbed' to have acquired the rights to adapt the Decamp, Carter and Nyberg pastiche work. This caused a problem as the the Asgalun of the Conanised 'Hawks over Shem' differed from the Marvel QotBC adaptation. Only Roy Thomas could have pulled that off, he was the best.

Great stuff! Sad to hear that Volume 34 is the final one. I have a lot of holes to fill in my collection. I need to have all of these displayed on a bookshelf.
