Frank Castle needs a divorce alright, a divorce from Marvel.

On a more positive note, I see that Baen Books is putting their toe in the water with a graphic novel adaptation of John Ringo's Black Tide Rising series and an original superhero series, Ascendant: Star-Spangled Squadron. Now, if you know Baen, you know they're not much for woke BS. If they handle this right, they might be able to build an audience from the people the Big Two are discarding.

35 years of tradition. Then, completely change your formula for woke points and insult the fans who aren't on board. Bold strategy, Cotton. Let's see if it pays off for em'.
If you're doing Heavy Metal magazine and it doesn't make you think of this: you're doing it wrong.

Haven't checked out Heavy Metal for some time, but I used to think their trademark work was stuff like this. So what was the go, they started dressing their women in burka fighting garb, no flesh allowed. Seems strange, almost intentional, that they would rather run these late twentieth century magazines into the ground than drop the woke nonsense.

It was like the sorta thing that might happen if an internet Karen bought out a heavy metal biker's bar, gave it a post modern makeover with muzak softly playing in the background and had put up a notice saying 'no drinking, no swearing - and no bikers.'
Shortly after that the place was crickets!

Here's my current pull list:
Keep in mind I was getting between 50-60 titles a month during the heyday of DC's Identity Crisis, 52, etc...
Gargoyles Gargoyles: Dark Ages (coming out soon) Fire & ice (coming out soon) Conan: the Barbarian Lord of the Jungle (last issue just came out) Death Dealer (wrapping up, but haven't read a single issue yet)

Whilst the situation is dire for the established outlets it's good for the indies. Look to see some great new talents and voices growing out of the indie market.
Meanwhile here's some more insight from Wes:
Comic Book Sales Are Way Worse Than You Imagine

Wow, that's such a poor showing my Marvel and DC. Only Batman Year One and a Moon Knight TPB cracking the North American Top 100 graphic novels? Pathetic. As Wes said, the Direct Market numbers have to be horrible if the graphic novel sales are any indication. For those who didn't watch the video: Scholastic makes up 40% of the North American graphic novel sales market. DC and Marvel are in the mid single digits respectively. If it wasn't for that Dogman guy's Scholastic books and imported manga, it would be a wasteland in the North American comic market. When are DC and Marvel going to wake up, clean house, and fire these idiots?

When are DC and Marvel going to wake up, clean house, and fire these idiots? That is a disaster. Quality-wise Marvel is doing great work. But apparently no one is buying it. Masterworks used to be “ok” if they were selling like 1700 copies in preorder. I can’t imagine what they’re doing now. They must be doing ok enough to keep putting out things like Dazzler but there’s no way we’re getting the Atlas line back if this is what’s going on. And that’s the old stuff, nothing new is leaving so much as a ripple out there. My son went back to reading Spider Man Masterworks V1 again this week. Whatever you did then, you’re not doing now.

I bought a blind buy Catwoman: Dangerous Liaisons TPB because I like the character and the art preview looked good.
What a mistake. I don't think I will bother looking at hardly anything modern again.

Comic retailers reported weak sales for Spring 2023 (January through April), and as is usually the case when comics (or any entertainment medium) has a sustained period of lackluster engagement, there’s general agreement that the problem is between the covers of the books that are coming to market, especially from Marvel Comics and DC Comics. "There’s not a lot that a retailer can do about product that isn’t exciting to customers," John Robinson of Midwest retail chain Graham Crackers Comics said. "It’s not like publishers are trying to publish mediocre product, they’d like every EVENT to count and grab the public’s attention, it’s just not happening." Asked about Marvel and DC sales, Bob Schaeffer of Dragon’s Lair Comics & Fantasy in San Antonio, Texas had much the same observation. "[They’re] trending down because many retailers that I’ve spoken to, including myself, don’t really see that there’s much of a coherent editorial vision with them," he told us. "They’re chasing the same thing, or chasing whatever they believe is the hot new thing." And across the country in California, San Francisco retailer Brian Hibbs of Comix Experience was singing the same song. "It’s across the board that periodicals are having a lot of trouble," he said. "By and large, it’s because the publishers have not been doing the thing they need to do, which is trying to increase their market and get new customers in. They’re just trying to maximize the amount of money that they’re getting from the people who are already buying comics, which worked for a little while, but then it stopped working because people can smell sincerity." Hibbs noted that the level of talent working on comics had declined, which was affecting the content pipeline. "In this particular moment, the major issue that I see is people doing things outside of the market,” he observed. "By that, I mean doing Kickstarters, selling their books on Whatnot, Substack. That took a lot out of the marketplace when the top 10, top 20, or top 50 creators all went off to work in a different market for a year or two. A lot of these people aren’t working for Marvel or DC or even Image to get the material out there." "If you don’t have big name people doing big name material at the big name companies, then where’s the excitement in the market?," he continued. Robinson of Graham Crackers also rued the weaker talent rosters. "Lots of C-list creators put on major titles or events," he said. "Less and less artists willing to do interiors." icv2.com/articles/markets/view/54696/comic-sales-lag-weak-spring

And I just added the upcoming Conan title. Like you, I once had several titles on the list, and I'd be visiting the comic shop just about every week. Now I'm lucky if I go once a month.
