I'm surprised that we don't have a thread on Herbert and his classic novel. When I first read Dune in high school, I'd already been a Howard for for 5+yrs. To me, there were definite echoes of REH's themes of barbarism vs civilization in Herbert's magnum opus. I've never seen confirmation that Herbert was a Howard fan, but his two best friends -- Poul Anderson and Jack Vance -- were. We do know that Herbert was a fan of ERB. Anyway, the Los Angeles Review of Books has a good overview of the novel here: lareviewofbooks.org/article/the-secret-history-of-dune/#! It does a worthy job of going over the numerous links -- first pointed out to me by John Maddox Roberts 10+yrs ago -- between Dune and Blanch's The Sabres of Paradise. The Chilton first edition of Dune.

Thanks for the link Deuce.
I have not read Dune, I have not seen the movie either, I know, there's no excuse really. But, I read The Sabres of Paradise years ago and I loved the book. I had no idea of the connection between Dune and Sabres - seems fascinating.

Love Dune , planning on listening to it when we go on holiday ! BTW Deuce seems there might be quite a lot going on with it . Check out Brian Herbert's FB page www.facebook.com/brianherbertnovels/Thought the TV series' a few years back were pretty good for TV shows at the time , be nice to see Bill Sienkiewicz's adaptation get a reprint - missed it when it came out. If you haven't seen it yet, check out the documentary on the failed attempt by Jodorowsky (with the aid of Moebius and Hr Giger) to make a Dune movie in the 70s. This is one of only two (I believe) existing copies of Meobius' storyboards for the movie. some sample character designs... Giger's design for the Harkonnen palace... I am in the process of reading through Herbert's original Dune novels, about to start Children. His son Brian recently announced that there is a graphic novel adaptation of the Dune cycle currently int he works as well. -M

1972...in another universe. I've still yet to see the director's cut of the original film - one of my favs. It's literally right up there with Star Wars for notable quotes. Can't guess how many times me or a buddy, who's a huge Herbert fan, have quoted from the film. One of our favs:

I love the original DUNE novel and love the concept of a series, but I've always thought that the second book was around half as good as the first and the third was half as good as the second. I could never make it through #4, but I hear that if one can make it through the series it's a good read. I just can't get there.
Part of my problem is that I like the characters presented in the original, and DUNE (the series) tends to be very generational and I don't find the kids-of-kids characters to be as cool as those of the original. (I have the same problem with SHANNARA, by the way.) For that reason I've enjoyed the Anderson/Herbert HOUSE trilogy (House Atreides, House Harkonnen, House Corrino) but could never get fired up about the Anderson/Herbert books that go back to the early days. At least Leto and company exist in the original, so they fit well into my personal enjoyment window.
I found the DUNE movie to be decent enough and liked both scifi channel miniseries somewhat. Dune is just a hard world to film because there is so much intrigue and diplomacy intermingled with the action/battles.
Just my two cents.

With the passing of Hugh Hefner, it is perhaps apropos to note that Playboy premiered an excerpt from God Emperor of Dune in its January, 1981 issue. Hefner was a lifelong fan of SFF/weird fiction and Playboy was one of the best-paying markets for such well into the '80s.

Cineplex is showing David Lynch's Dune in early February. I want to go just to see the response of a live audience to Sting's space codpiece.

Well...not so much, Gordon.

Alas, bad scheduling and bad roads meant I was unable to attend the showing of Dune. Dang it.
