I was working on that when I got the call to provide a novella to be serialized in Marvel's new Conan the Barbarian comic. Black Starlight, the 18,000 word Conan yarn appearing in the comic magazine in monthly installments, is that story. It's a direct follow-up to Conan and the Emerald Lotus and I hope anyone who has fond memories of the novel checks it out. With a bit of luck both yours and Scott's novellas will later be collected and published in book form as well. Yes, i would like to read those new tales in book prose format, please? [ i will not be buying a string of comics ][ short monthly instalments is no way to fully enjoy a long story ] ==== >> Hi VK. Hope you are keeping well? [ have you read the good new poems by Keith and Kail and Chris in our pit? We all miss your support ]

It appears we'll get a third novella as well.
I finally got round to a local comics shop and picked up Conan the Barbarian #1 & #2. Mr. Hocking, a quick note, I'm enjoying Black Starlight! I think that gentleman clanging his two swords together in the deserted city square is up to no good...
Anyway, The Hyborian Page (letters/editors comments) at the end of CtB #2 has this paragraph:
"At this point, I bet you're wondering if AGE OF CONAN: BELIT will, too, feature a brand-new novella... and all I'll say is that I don't think Belit would be happy with us if we left her out of the fun... more on this next issue!"
So: CtB - Black Starlight by John Hocking SSOC - The Shadow of Vengeance by Scott Oden Age of Conan - UNKNOWN NOVELLA by UNKNOWN AUTHOR
SSOC hits newsstands Feb. 13 and Belit hits newsstands March 13.
Bux I feel you on "the further adventures of Belit"... she's not been treated the best in the past. But I love pirate stories and I'm thinking a Belit comic will have some good Hyborian piracy, and if there's good prose fiction as well, then I think I'm in for that.
Anybody have any insight on this third novella?
Mick

At three pages a month I can't imagine that Black Starlight is going to shake things up much, but the action kicks up a notch or two in the next installment. The guy with two swords is...well...you'll see.
I understand that the author of the Belit story to be serialized in The Age of Conan is Michael Stackpole. I'm fully psyched to read both that one and Scott Oden's offering for Savage Sword.

Hmm... I thought the Stackpole pastiche was going to be a full length novel. But I’m cool with a novella as well.

Mr. Stackpole's novel about Belit and his shorter yarn about the she-pirate that we'll see serialized in Age of Conan are two different works.

Thanks for the info. == i would love to read a new tale by you about conan with belit? Best wishes from your most buxom fan ==== >> Hey, i've just realised that your cool avatar is old Wyatt Earp. That's a classy photo.

When Perilous Worlds dropped me a note asking if they could take a look at my 22 year-old, time-lost manuscript of Conan and the Living Plague I didn't know if they could or not. Took a couple days before I finally found a copy on an old drive. This entire experience is pretty surreal for me. I don't think I'll really believe it's happening until I actually hold a finished copy of my second Conan pastiche in my hand.
I also found what survived of the work on my aborted third pastiche, Conan in the City of Pain. Perilous Worlds seemed open to my trying to finish it, but I think we'll have to see the response to Living Plague and the re-issue of Emerald Lotus before anything even begins to happen.

I hope we all agree to shell out for a new copy of Emerald Lotus to show how much we care. Actually John if you'd add an extra chapter we'd have no excuse not to buy it LOL

Thanks for the clarification Mr Hocking! I thought Stackpole did a great job with his novelization of Conan the Barbarian, so I look forward to the Belit tales. As for yourself, if the Conan books do well, would you consider doing other works featuring other characters? I’m betting you would rock a Cormac tale; Dark Ages version or Crusader adventure equally...

I can only imagine what strong emotions you are still going through? When living plague has been published you will be over the moon. And we keen fans will be delighted to read it all at long last. i hope you can re-connect your enthusiasm with your 'city of pain'? [ i think you had plans for about 6 conan books way back then? do you still have synopsis notes on them all? ] ==== i am delighted that Perilous worlds are so keen. long may they continue to encourage REH fanfics.

How about a book of short stories by one writer set in the world of a Howard character. Think Ray Bradbury's "Martian Chronicles". Howard was not only a great action writer but a poetic writer as well.

I'm told that my time-lost pastiche, Conan and the Living Plague, is at the printers now. So I imagine it will be available shortly. Hope so.
Looking forward to this with a mixture of joy, trepidation and disbelief. Joy because it looks as if the book I worked so hard on so long ago will finally be available for those who want to read it. Trepidation because some of those who want to read it have waited an unholy long time to do so, and if I still think the book is pretty good I'm not sure that it's "I waited 20 years for this?" good. And disbelief, because the novel's path has been so long and beset with obstacles that I really won't believe it's an actual published book until I can hold a copy in my hands.
