Will it be possible for Titan UK to release an English translation like they did with the Elric books? No. Glenat is able to produce Conan adaptations because the stories have become public domain in France. They are not public domain in the US and Paradox holds the rights. These will not be available for sale legally in the US or anywhere the Conan stories have not entered the public domain. I checked with several shop owners and dealers, and was essentially told that if I want these I have to know someone form a country where they are sold to buy them for me and have them shipped or buy direct from Glenat or a vendor in France or elsewhere they will be sold as they won't be available in the US. Could things change? Sure, if some sort of deal is worked out with the Conan properties owners (Paradox) in the US, but they have already given Marvel/Disney the exclusive rights to Conan in the US, so such a deal is unlikely. -M |

I'm curious....could DH or some other company do the comics when they enter public domain in the US?

I am not sure where you live, but you will have to order the Glenat editions directly from France or somewhere else the Conan stories are in the public domain so they can distribute them because the Glenat editions in French will not be available to be sold in the US. I have tried to order them but because of the copyright laws of the the US, no adaptations not approved by Paradox can be sold in the US. It's not about getting translations, it's about getitng the Glnat editions themselves in the US that is the issue. -M |

With Disney holding the license to the character, short answer: No. You're entering into the whole Iron Shadows film territory and we saw how that ended. Paradox is going to protect their copyright on the character strenuously.

The comic-book stores here are unlikely/unable to order the Conan Glénat books and unfortunately the same goes for most book stores. But they are available through Amazon UK and Canada. I can't say I'm 100% down with that drawing style for Conan. Yeah, I agree. I think the art of Pierre Alary is not that impressive. Queen of the Black Coast adaptations have been problematic in recent years, I guess we're kinda used to it by now thanks to the Brian Wood run. But, I do like the look of Black Colossus by Ronan Toulhoat, especially in Black & White - and I think Robin Recht's art appears to work for the Frost-Giant's Daughter. |
