Spielberg announced that filming for Indy 5 starts next year.
I have lots of opinions but this website more or less puts forward what I'd like to see in the upcoming film: CAN ‘INDIANA JONES 5’ FIND REDEMPTION? Keep it focused on Indy and bring on the pulp adventure. Some good news is that they've already confirmed Shai LeBouf's character will not be in the film. But after The Last Jedi and all of the anti-male action/bravery splattered across that film, I'm a little concerned with what direction this Indy film could go. If that's the route they go Indy'll probably have to play second fiddle to some up and coming female archaeologist who not only out-Indy's Indy, but will do so in a more gentle, wise, and diverse way. But hope springs eternal in the human breast and I can't help (perhaps to my great disappointment) that we'll get another great Indiana Jones flick. I'm not sure how it'll work on screen, but there's something kind of cool about an almost 80 year old Indy.

Indiana Jones and the Curse of the Swollen Prostate?
Seriously though, I agree with you. I hope we see a return to something closer to the original. Let's face it, this is a film so there is no reason why Indy can't be as vibrant at 80ish as he was in his late 30s(?). There is no need for a sidekick and it might be better if he didn't. He could be more cantankerous than he was and not suffer fools. Paying lip service to prevailing political and social forms will only assure this will be a sad conclusion to Indy's career.

He could be more cantankerous than he was and not suffer fools. Paying lip service to prevailing political and social forms will only assure this will be a sad conclusion to Indy's career. Considering this is 10 years after the fourth film, which was set in 1957, we could find Indy knee deep in the swinging sixties. Not sure how I feel about that just yet, because it naturally lends itself to certain ideological perspectives that arise in that era that I think are antithetical to how Indy operates. Also, the world is smaller in the '60's as opposed to the '30's, which takes a little shine off of the mystery of the world. Even though the fourth film was a travesty, I think they did an adequate job of showing how Indy was becoming a fish out of water. Now considering that it's now a Disney property, and how Disney has already cashed in on Star Wars, one has the feeling that this by no means will be the last Indiana Jones flick. I'm a little torn. Part of me would just like Indy to ride off into the sunset for a final amazing film, but I don't thin Disney will let that happen. So assuming they're going to jump all in with this, it could be handled a few different ways. They could go the James Bond route and reskin the whole shebang with a new actor and continue doing so with new reiterations. It'd be tricky to pull off though, since Ford has been Indy for not just 5 films, but for nearly 40 years. A 'new' Indy reiteration would have extremely low margin for error. I think it could be done, but they'd have to really pull a rabbit out of the hat. The good part about this though is that Indiana Jones movies are set up perfectly for this kind of thing as each movie is easily self contained. Another route is the one they flirted with in the 4th movie. Passing the hat along to someone younger, an apprentice type character where we see the transfer from Jones to the newbie. Problem with that is the newbie isn't Indy. To do this they'd have to sell us some sort of 'World of Indiana Jones' type thing. This would have the potential to fly off the rails easier than a simple reiteration...but it could also have the potential for something pretty cool. Imagine in this (presumed) last Ford movie that Indiana Jones creates a society of scholar-adventurers. Indiana Jones in future movies could then be more of a mentor figure, a cameo if Ford wants to, or eventually just recognized as and alluded to. They could create a veritable universe going this route having the freedom to create new heroes that won't necessarily have to fill in Ford's hat. They could capitalize on this in a million ways. Who wouldn't want to join a society created by Indiana Jones? Movies, T.V. shows, books, comics, etc. (This thing sells itself! You heard it here first. ) The last route they could go is flashbacks. I think it'd be an utter failure (I think the new Solo movie is going to be a tough sell) to try to get some young actor to play Ford's Indy. Outside of that you could maybe do spin offs and get new actors for characters we know like Sallah and Short Round or Henry Jones Sr, and Marcus Brody. Again, I don't know how successful this would be, simply because they aren't Indy. Just some thoughts!

I guess I would be okay with some sort of reboot of the character back in the 1930's if they can find the right actor to play the part. I'd almost wish for Nathan Fillion from Firefly/Castle, but he's getting up there in age as well and it wouldn't be long before they'd have to look all over again.

I actually think Fillion and Ford are very similar actors. They can both say a million things with their face without saying anything. But yeah, he's likely too old now.

Agreed, and if someone could find a younger version of that same thing (or clone one of the two actors somehow) we might get a decent Indiana Jones.
I don't know a lot about the actor playing the new Han Solo, but so far the short clips I've seen don't have that same spark so he's probably not the guy to be Indy.
