Doing a little google detective work I discovered that there was an article called "Will the Real Charles R. Allen Please Stand Up?" wherein, according to this archived website, "novelist/pulp scholar Will Murray debunks the assertion by Tod Browning biographer David J. Skal that the famed director wrote pulp mysteries under the pen name Charles R. Allen." I've tried to find the article or even the particular issue it was written in, but to no avail. I found one blog mention the article, but with no more information than above. I don't know if Murray pinpoints who Charles R. Allen is, but it at least seems to be a legit mysterious pen name. Tracking down the article or the author might prove interesting.

possibly the name was used by several authors...maybe even Howard. Ive noticed that very few authors worked on the spicys...but they used numerous pen names. Sam Walser and Charles R Allen appeared together sometimes so who knows. Whoever Charles R Allen was, he could spin a yarn
