Charles R Allen sure sounds like a house name to me. I read a story last night on Pulpgen called House of Weird Sleep. The further I read into the story the more the writing style reminded me of Howard. It was published around the same time as Howard's other tales in in Spicy Adventures. I caught a lot of grief once for suggesting another story on pulpgen might have been done by Howard. I have since come to think it was by E Hoffman Price who was a Howard fan. House of Weird Sleep is very close to Howard's style. Lots of action, fistfights, shootouts, etc. I know most pulp fiction was like that but most weren't written with Howard's flair. It is a fun story and definitely worth reading. I will make a link in the next post.

I've never heard of Howard writing under the name Charles R Allen, but I do look forward to the link so that I can read the story. Anything that close to REH's style sounds like a great read!  EDIT: I see you got the link posted faster than I could reply. Now to scurry off and read.... |

check the tale out and post your opinion. Anybody know who Charles R Allen was or if he was a person or alias...good writer whoever did the story IMO...if you like wild, fast paced pulp with tons of action and females in trouble

it would be fun to read opinions about this tale...love that pulp fiction!!!!
years ago I read an article that quoted Howard as saying he sold a couple more spicy tales that were ever published as far as we know...I have always been curious about that ever since...and its fun to wonder about when you read a wild tale like House of Weird Sleep. Whoever wrote it was a talented fellow for sure, if you like that sort of fast paced action story.

yeah its most likely not Howard but House names got used a lot by a lot of different people Drums of Doom sounds interesting, wish I could get my hands on it...and learn more It was published at almost precisely the same time as Howards other Spicy Adventure tales

Well, this certainly isn't as ridiculous as you suggesting that REH (as "Don King") wrote "White Meat".
The prose is fairly Howardian, some good action and the plot is decent. However, we have plenty of examples of REH writing "black dialect" and the example in that story doesn't sound much like it at all.
Still, a decent pulp story.

oddly enough, Sam Walser has a story in a Spicy Adventure alongside "Charles Allen's" Drums of Doom...hmmmmm
I would certainly like to check out Drums of Doom. Howard had a way of knocking out several of these five thousand words tales in a weeks time and sending them off to wherever. I doubt he got paid for many of them since he died so soon after they were published so who knows. That would make any records askew

Still, a decent pulp story. a good point but the story does have a huge menacing black man just the same...and hes not from Africa or way out in the sticks down south so that could explain the different drawl...or not |

another possibility is Bellem...he was darn good and used the name Nick a lot...seems more Howards style to me tho Bellem would have injected more sex too |

whoever Allen was, He was very good...I have since read a couple more of his tales. Prob no way in heck to really discover who he really was or even if he was maybe a real person which I 99percent doubt since most stories in the spicys were penned under a phony name
