A mini-review of Alpha by the estimable Ryan Harvey: It’s unfortunate that ALPHA was delayed for a year, given little promotion, and released among more attention-grabbing late summer fare, because it is a literally awesome film—as in the jaw drops in awe at the beauty of it. The story is a basic one: the young hunter out to prove his leadership who goes through an ordeal trying to get back home with the help of a dog companion. The basic beats of the tale won’t surprise most viewers. But Albert Hughes (the first time he’s directed without his brother Allen) shoots it with intense passion, as if he’s striving for 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY levels of vast transcendentalism—while also appreciating the action/adventure qualities of ONE MILLION YEARS BC. It’s rough, strange, dream-like, and both one of the best dog movies and prehistory movies ever made.

I saw trailers for it in front of several films as far back as Peter Rabbit around Easter. Then when it comes to the actual release date, barely a blip.

Alpha is looking very much like one of those movies everybody's going to praise after the fact. It's frustrating how movies either succeed or fail long before they actually hit the screens. I'm going to see it later this week.

Hey I really enjoyed this pre historic epic. I thought it was extremely well done with a compelling story and nice effects all the way. Much more fun than another costumed super hero avoiding big explosions and what not...far superior to Star Wars...give it a try for something gritty and even more than a little educational!? The ending was very very cool also, wont give it away though...go have fun and see Alpha

they paid a lot of attention to the details and the effects were very nicely done...but not overdone I've always loved stone age movies like 10,000 BC, Quest for Fire, Clan of the Cave Bear, Iceman, the opening of 2001, etc. Heck, I'll even throw The Croods and Apocalypto in that list (both are awesome). I'm sure there's others I'm forgetting. So I'm looking forward to this. The special effects, mammoths and sabortooths, are a huge draw for me. I wish they'd include some of the more oddball critters in there now and then, the prehistoric sloth would be neat to see realistically animated.

I'm going to see it later this week. Yeah, they seem to have hired the old "John Carter" marketing team. Just sad, really.
