Aye. Those were the days — browsing the magazine section and its plentiful selection. Digital medium's experience can't hold a candle to it. I understand the need for it, but. . . it does not evoke the same emotion. Most store's magazine section these days, if they even have one, is like a couple feet wide. And even then most of the magazines are those silly $14.95 Super Specials. I really wanted a black and white SSOC. If it is not black and white its just another Conan comic, not SSOC (in my opinion). The black and white art style is additive to form and function in many ways, not a subtraction. That said, I understand the market has changed. Although, Walking Dead is still B&W, with all of its immense popularity.
And the big question, will Hyborian War be advertising on the back cover again?
Actually laughed, out loud! Does pen and paper mail gaming even exist anymore? I know there are many enthusiasts that try to keep so many things going, no matter how archaic. Maybe the US Post Office should run promos for mail gaming to help them recover?

I am one of the B&W magazine format for SSOC guys. That was SSOC, and we never called it a comic. Marvel should understand that a large component of the market for SSOC will be driven by the twentieth century fans of the mag.
Having said that, I will be getting the limited SSOC five part mini series, I suppose you have to do that. Maybe Marvel will hear us and give us a monthly SSOC in the original format, or maybe I don't know jack and it's something they can't afford to do these days.

That's disappointing news. First it's not magazine size. Then colour panels. Now only a mini-series.

It's an ongoing series. This particular story arc is five issues long.

Dang I was actually hoping it would only be 5 issues....
I don't think there is a market is there for two Conan ongoings.
Maybe we'll luck out and since Marvel bought the license they'll put the book out regardless of how low the sales go and do some cool, experimental stuff with it they can't do in the main book, ala b&w or let it go MAX.

I think if they attract the right talent for each 5 issue story-arc it'll be reasonably successful. Don't forget by October next year we have the 50th anniversary of the 1st issue of Conan the Barbarian by Marvel - they'll probably take advantage of the anniversary with Conan variant covers on all of the Marvel books and follow it up with a Legacy renumbering for the 300th issue of CtB.

Hopefully folks will like it! I went the "Why, Crom? Why?" route and attempted to mimic REH's style as well as the character. We'll see how *that* turned out come February

The original title was Savage Sword of Conan the Barbarian. They had 'The Barbarian' bit underneath the larger Savage Sword of Conan print. The new incarnation just has the Savage sword of Conan. It is a departure from the original SSOC in more ways than one. Probably cheaper to use the same standard size for all their comics. About roughly 10 inches x 6.5 inches, and somewhere 20 to 22 pages of story, plus some adverts ( give or take ). At least would have been good to do SSOC in black and white to differentiate it from its brother Conan the Barbarian.

I'm certain your efforts were not in vain. I haven't looked forward to reading a pastiche so much since the Bantam era, almost forty years ago.

Is it really still going?
