I recently thought back to my first encounter with comics. It was quite a momentous occasion.
I was visiting at a neighbors house and it was just lying there. I suppose it was a issue of Journey
Into Mystery. The thing that made this comic special was the fact that it contained the first ever
story about Thor, God of Thunder. It thrilled me to my gizzard to put it mildly.
When Dr Blake found
the old stick, struck it against the ground and turned into Thor...I was amazed. Then he fought off
and invasion of monsters.
I was a tiny little fellow but somehow I realized the significance of this comic and I never forgot it.
Shortly after I discovered (at someone else's house) Spiderman. I wish I still had the wide open
mind that I had then. But I really owe Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and the rest a lot. Of course
a few years later I encountered Conan and I embarked on a new imagination investigation.
Not sure why Im writing all this but it seems to matter somehow. For better or worse a force was released
back in the 1960s that is still going strong today...obviously. I guess one can say what they want about
the USA. For sure this nation has a horribly dark history, including black deeds done before the first white
man ever set foot on the continent. Being part Indian, I do not paint them as saints...far from it.
But we have given the world some very good things too...and since we are the final chapter in the
Greco Roman/Christian epic...maybe the escapism through comics and other media could possibly be our greatest legacy of all.
please pardon the rant
