Marvel is trying to bring in a new audience, just like Dark Horse did with their Queen of the Black Coast adaptation. We already know how this bullshit will end. Another wasted opportunity. One of many...

Saw it in the comic store, flicked through, passed on it. Not for me.

"Asgulin". And Belit looks like an albino despite getting lots of sun. Marvel's Conan has been painful so far. I was worried they hadn't adapted any of REH's stories yet, but now I'm beginning to think that's a good thing.

I don't know why, but as I was reading this, it felt like a story from a port city from Game of Thrones more so than from the world of Conan.
I did not appreciate the artwork either. I not saying it is bad, but I feel it isn't the right fit for a Belit tale. Is that shiny leggings she's wearing also? The supposed honorable death thing between her and her father lacked any kind of emotion at all, and I felt like I was reading a text book rather than an origin tale of a fierce pirate that would one day strike fear into all and sundry. The story and artwork lacked any emotional attachment that could allow you to continue with this story. The overall feel of this issue gave the impression that it is aimed for very young readers, which is a shame as I really had high hopes for this series. That is two marvel issues in a row now that I have been disappointed with (the other being CtB #4).
The prose at the back was the book's saving grace. The 'Bone Whispers' was enjoyable, perhaps as I could imagine in my mind's eye, better artwork than which had preceded it. I did enjoy the first part of the Bone whispers story. I have enjoyed CtB so far (except issue #4) and Savage Sword as well. I was hoping that Age of Conan Belit was going to be great, but instead we got Age of Disney Princess Belit.

I finally read this last night, and I wasn't impressed. I figured I'd at least give it a shot, but I don't think I'll be finishing this series. I haven't read the 'Bone Whispers' story in the back yet, but even if I like it, I'm hesitant to pay the cover price just for that...

The regular covers by Sana Takeda are beautiful, but don't feel right for the Age of Conan book - still nice art on the covers. The art and story by Tini Howard & Kate Niemczyk have let this book down, I also doubt I'll pick up the 2nd issue. I guess I'll have to read Bone Whispers in the Perilous Worlds collection.
