What's your favorite Hodgson scene? For me there is almost unparalleled in tales of horror the scene when the narrator of House on the Borderland looks up and sees the pig-faced beast staring in his window. Gads - I was reading that at night the first time I read it and I swear it brought on a case of goosebumps I rarely experience. The only other story can I recall that had that produced such a real-life chilling feeling was in reading an old Famous Fantastic Mysteries pulp with a story by Phillip M. Fisher entitled Beyond the Pole. Read it at night!

I would have to say that scene is definitely in my top five from the WHH canon. The House on the Borderland is a weird classic.

A cool little factoid from the Andre Norton website: More specifically, William Hope Hodgsorn’s The Night Land, a book Ms. Norton was instrumental in having included in Lin Carter’s Ballantine Adult Fantasy Series, is the direct source for Night of Masks. Night of Masks resulted from her fascination with Hodgson’s dark world, and her setting and characters benefit from the innovative concept of a world lit by an infrared sun.

Fantastique! I yet need to complete my BAF collection - been working slowly on it for years... ...under the sign of the Unicorn Head....

I love collecting various editions of my favorite authors. I just discovered this version of Night Land by Sphere. Don't have it yet, but its now in my sights. I only own a few Sphere editions (Howards and Burroughs, I believe) and they are consistently wicked as frig.

Here is the original painting by ace British artist, Peter Andrew Jones...
