Well this was a surprise in the Hachette catalog in the January 2020 section... Presenting Marvel’s epic adaptation of Robert E. Howard’s sole Conan novel, The Hour of the Dragon, plus its amazing Conan Annual sequels. And, for the first time ever, the complete saga is presented in full color! Roy Thomas, Gil Kane and John Buscema bring the classic story of palace intrigue and eldritch horrors to life. The evil Xaltotun returns from the dark ages of Acheron to depose Conan, King of Aquilonia. While the world thinks him dead, Conan battles his way from dungeon to tower and mounts an all-out war—for Conan must mete out the most savage vengeance upon usurpers! In the process, he encounters Zenobia, the stunning slave woman who will become a key figure in his future. COLLECTING: GIANT-SIZE CONAN (1974) 1-4, SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN (1974) 1, 8 (JPT-I think they mean #10) AND CONAN THE BARBARIAN ANNUAL (1973) 4-5. Listed on page 37: edel-images.azureedge.net/ea/TW/pdfs/MARVEL-Jan-Apr2020-FINAL.pdfThis isn't that far off from my idea of a King Conan volume (either 0 or 1), but I would have also included Phoenix and Scarlet Citadel...but SC would have also been in color...that's my main concern: which kind of color will we be getting? Are we going to get a modern color palette, meaning HEAVY on the browns and greys, or one more similar to the four color version in the 70s?

$34.99 for a 288 page comic is pricey as hell.

$34.99 for a 288 page comic is pricey as hell. The colorist's payment has to come from somewhere...preorder and get it for under $20 (at least for the US readers). If they'd included Phoenix and a freshly colored Scarlet Citadel, I'd have paid Masterwork prices, provided they did the coloring right.

DH promised they’d do a collection of HOTD and never came through. So this is an attempt to make it how Roy intended it to be in GS Conan #1-6 but got derailed when the Giant Size line ended.

So, I want to make certain I am getting this right: the only thing new in this is the colorization of SSOC #8, correct? I am interested in this for this reason alone, just curious.
Also, curious how Amazon is not discounting this, they are charging cover price. They usually discount everything.

I am definitely picking this up, just to have it in one volume is enough for me. I never did get read these all in the right order. It is lazy of me, but this will be a nice holiday read.

To get a consistent look, they may have decided to recolor all the HOTD material, but we'll have to wait until we see it. I know sometimes Amazon doesn't discount HCs and trades until they come out and even then it's not guaranteed.

But that's just, like, my opinion, man. It's still worth picking up.

I was led to Howard through Savage Sword. Savage Sword and the Black and white comic magazines of that era have ever exerted a powerful force upon me that cannot be denied.
