I picked this up. After all these years I still can't read a comic with Gil Kane art.

Over the years I kinda expected to eventually somehow like Gil Kane's art, but it is just not happening. It took me a while (around a decade ago) to appreciate the work of Barry Windsor-Smith on Conan. Always been a fan of Big John Buscema's rendition of Conan.

Barry Smith became a phenomenal artist by the time he adapted Red Nails. His late work for me is gorgeous. Had he kept his work on Conan after Red Nails he would be maybe even better than big John. In the beginning of his career, though, he was not great and left a lot to be desired. His work on Conan the Barbarian up to issue 15 more or so is very overrated. Gil Kane for me has never done anything truly great with the barbarian and his Conan is just an average work. I am yet to really like anything he's done on Conan. Ernie Chan is another artist I don't like. He is great on drawing anything but Conan. His Conan is very stiff and it has nothing to do with what John Buscema is about. It is a shame he finished so many Buscema stories because they would be all better off without Chan.

But you certainly notice the difference without the mighty pencils of Big John Buscema - the same goes for Alfredo Alcala and Tony DeZuniga. Barry Windsor-Smith developed an ornate, intricate style of artwork on Conan, but his detailed artwork really doesn't do it for me like the work of Buscema.

Great issue !!!!! Even if some dislike Ernie Chan, it's really a great adventure with so much invention. I had waited this for years as the existing scans are so poor (but existing…) The color is good The colored SSoC are good Everything is good here Thanks Marvel at last...

OK, I caved and picked this up digitally. Why did it takes SO long for someone to do digital coloring at least CLOSE to how they did it back in the 70s? It's not perfect but it's close enough to what it might have looked like if it was done for a fill in issue, annual or Treasury Edition. I'd be comfortable if they'd do more like this.

I need to re-read the Howard text as I did not remember Zenobia being a redhead. Enjoying it although the art is not killer at the start.

In chapter 5-“her hair was a mass of dark foam, at the burnished luster of which the dim light only hinted.” Sounds like it was darker than red, but the burnished luster part could be used as an excuse. Artistically it’s probably just a device to differentiate her from Belit and Valeria (basically taking Sonja’s place in the pantheon and since she’s an actual Howard character, it’s better for this story).

To burnish something it to make it shiny, he might have been implying her hair was dark "dark foam" and burnished, or shiny. I would take it to mean that she had very nice hair but he could barely tell because of the dark, but it can easily be interpreted another way.

Once the Ernie Chan/Buscema team picked up art, I liked it better. Zenobia is almost enough to change my mind about redheaded women.
