Review: SAVAGE AVENGERS #9 Savage Avengers is at its best when Conan has a personality as big as his own to play off of, and you can’t get much bigger than Doctor Doom. That interplay between the two is what makes this issue so enjoyable, though writer Gerry Duggan also takes advantage of having Doctor Strange around with some hilarious trolls by Conan, calling him things like little wizard and the sleepy magician. The visuals are a bit of a mixed bag, as artist Patch Zircher and colorist Java Tartaglia excel when magic is involved but aren’t as impactful when Conan is the focal point, but they do manage to deliver one heck of a last page. Savage Avengers is way more fun than I expected it to be, but it’s all about the clashing of personalities and less about the clashing of swords. -- Matthew Aguilar

I love these maps in each issue. They should have a Hyborian Age map slowly emerge over the modern map as Conan gets closer to returning to his own era.

Must they make Conan sound like a Conan parody? I do like his rapport with various characters like Frank Castle, Wolverine and Doom but he just doesn't sound right to me.

Hun, what makes you think Conan will ever get back to his own age? Has Marvel given even the slightest indication of that. After all, 2099 is a long way off and a long time to wait.

Initially they said that Conan would be in the modern Marvel universe for around a year (sorry, I can't remember which article I read this in). Unfortunately, in the Savage Avengers Conan wants to stay in the modern era until he kills Kulan Gath. To make matters worse, Savage Avengers is selling slightly better than the other Conan related books - I have to admit I do enjoy reading the Savage Avengers. I don't think Marvel wanna send him back yet, but they will eventually. Won't they? I would not worry too much about Conan 2099. Marvel continuity stopped making sense years ago, if it sells they'll publish it! Hopefully, soon we will start getting some decent stories set in the Hyborian Age and all this stuff will be forgotten.

It's very rare for Conan to demonstrate any intelligence in these new books. I dunno why, maybe, that's what they think their audience wants or expects of the Cimmerian?

I think it is way back when Conan first appeared in Avengers: No Road Home that Marvel explained Conan would return to the Hyborian Age around a year after setting foot in the Savage Land. But a lotta things have changed since then.

I guess I don't have your patience. I'm old (72), who knows if I'll live long enough to see him return LOL. I just think things could have gone so much better with CtB. RT could have done the writing and Benito Gallego, the reincarnation of John Buscema, could have done the art. That would have been something.

Marvel just wants to milk some coins. They don't give a damn if Conan is being portrayed properly or not.

He'll probably return to the Hyborian Age when Savage Avengers finishes up, I'd say in the finale of the series. Savage Avengers won't go on for more than 25 or so issues, in this day and age that's just how things work.
I really hope they expand on Conan 2099, though because that's probably the best depiction of Conan as a character that Marvel has done. It showed off his intelligence and his overall characterization was pretty spot on. I hope they continue that in some form as that was a very unexpected surprise.

The Jim Zub run will start next month on the main book Conan the Barbarian #13. At least he does acknowledge the classic Roy Thomas run - I just hope he gets the first story-arc right.

Still don't understand why they didn't start with a new #1 it would have given the new arc a better boost.
